Being almost as far away from NYC as one can get but still be in New York State helps too. We have more in common with the people of PA and OH than we do the Downstate - NYC people.

Yes big difference. I've been a few times and while there are the usual "country people" in the Adirondacks it's also a lot of others that see it as their downstate refuge. You get the NYC authors, teachers, hippies, limousine liberals who think they are in nature at their cottage, democrat fudds, etc. The Adirondacks are much more like Vermont demographic than they are the southern tier.
It's very different from a place like Wyoming or cattaragus county. Both rural but very different people.

I'm right above Wyoming County in Genesee. At the time, a lot of Repeal the Safe Act signs up around here, (a lot! as in shit ton) and still some up here and there.
A lot of Astorino signs at the time.
A real lot of Trump signs not only at the time but even today there are a lot of them up.
Just down the road from me, a guy has "TRUMP" painted on the side of his house. The other way down the road there is a semi truck trailer parked near the road with the entire side painted with "TRUMP" I posted a picture of it here once. - You get the idea. LOL
As with most counties in WNY Genesee always votes red.
Genesee County only has a population of 56,000 but it's mostly farm fields and swamps.

Below is the 2016 presidential vote by county - Franklin county (where I am) is the county just west of the blue one in the upper right - the latter county is where SUNY Plattsburgh is situated...
Saranac Lake is virtually on the border of Franklin county and the pink county (Essex) to the east of the "panhandle" of Franklin and south of the DemonRat warren of Plattsburgh.
Both Franklin and Essex are pink, but neither is as red as the "core" ADK counties in the middle. In fact, if you look at the color shift, the lightest pink is only one step from light blue (DemonRat).
Every libtard virtue-signaling "cause" there is takes hold in Saranac Lake.
Even so, Franklin has more people than Essex county, so it's "less rural".
