We went in there because they were harboring bin laden after 9/11.
There wasn't any question about that.
The invasion was absolutely justified, if not well executed.
We always get in trouble when we decide to occupy. When you need to lay a beat down on some shithole, you need to pull out all the stops, then GTFO, don't hang around for a decade.
Should have had the CIA identify every Taliban leader worth anything before hand, then just rolled through executing all of them and anyone who got i n our way.
Then leave.
The goal is to make any other tin pot dictator realize that it is not in their best interest to tangle with us.
As it is, the Taliban will be back stronger than ever by the end of the decade.
9/11 would never have happened without our constant proxy war meddling in the region.

Has nothing to do with meddling, or wanting the oil, or some corporation making a profit. None of that matters.
It is *solely* about the US government's ability to maintain a massive budget deficit every year for decades without our economy imploding.
We can only do that because the rest of the world *has* to use US dollars to buy their oil.

No surprise, they all want to stop paying the "inflation tax" the US government imposes on them.
If they manage to do it, we are screwed.
If we go down, we are looking at WWIII inside of a decade, and maybe a new "dark ages". The only other possibility for a post US world is if China manages to take complete control and we end up in a global dystopian nightmare.
