There is no arguing that anyone CAN just up and go. The problem is, what price is there to pay to do so? Cost in dollars, but also the cost of moving from family and lifelong friends. Cost of the stress from finding new work. So on.Everyone *can* just up and move.
The cost is higher for some that others, but there is not a single person on this forum who couldn't just get in their car and drive across the border this afternoon.
You don't because the cost is too high for you.
Eventually the cost of staying will be greater than the cost of moving.
Just hope that's before you're at the point of sailing across the open ocean on a raft made from an old Desoto like the Cubans do, or a hot air balloon made from shower curtains like the East Germans.
So, don't say you *can't* leave. You absolutely can. You just think the price is too high.
Some of us spent a decade working that personal price down so that we could leave without having to give up too much.
I said this before and I will say it again. I could wake up tomorrow, go on Zillow and buy a property in TN or KY (our ideal states). The problem is, we have looked many times and it is very hard to find what we have. The times we do it is well over a half a million dollars. We are nestled in a small rural town, own close to 100 acres of beautiful land with streams, ponds, hardwoods. I spent 20 years perfecting my 40x80 shop. That alone would cost close to 100k to build. I could go on....
Would we make sacrifices knowing we wouldn't be able to clone what we have now? Of course. But we refuse to go buy some cookie cutter place on 2 acres of land in a HOA. We love our privacy, abundant wildlife, and of course shooting right off the back porch whenever I want. There are just some things that are not worth giving up in my opinion.
