10mm used by Danish Army for polar bears.
correct me if I'm wrong but hollow points are pretty shit when it comes to taking down bear correct? fmj is better because you'll get full penetration through their hide and muscle fibers? He's very lucky. Hollow points were used.

Alot of guides and outdoorsmen in Alaska are switching from 44 mag to 10mm.
Plenty of power and more rounds.
Ive got a Glock 20 and can attest to its power, even with factory ammo.
A couple guys I know up north have Glock 40s and one guy with a Ruger SR1911 in 10mm for brown bear protection.
He probably would have been fine with just a rape whistle.
There's always that.If that didnt work he could try peeing on himself
Might as well try running. If that didnt work he could try peeing on himself
Depends on the hollow point. Some of the Barnes are impressive but hard cast (not Fmj) is normally the way to go.correct me if I'm wrong but hollow points are pretty shit when it comes to taking down bear correct? fmj is better because you'll get full penetration through their hide and muscle fibers?

Bears love it when you run.
Well the only deep penetrating hollow points that I know of are for .44 Magnum that go about 22 inches. Perhaps a Casull round will do a bit more. Is 22 inches enough for reaching vitals? I don't know. I do know that the guy who used a 9mm in Alaska used a hard cast that goes 40 inches in gel and none of those penetrated both sides of the bear.Depends on the hollow point. Pound for pound, most 10mm setups are lighter than the .44 mag. Think about it, Glock 20 with 2 mags, 20 to 30 rounds depending on your state. I still hike with a .357 but I'm in the Allegheny forrest in NW PA. The 10mm option has crossed my mind.Yes per round the .44mag will beat the 10mm, but once you factor in the 10mm still having a lot of power, more rounds, easier to shoot faster 1st round and faster follow up shots, in my unprofessional opinion 10mm wins out for protection.. if we are talking about say just hunting not dangerous game sure I'd take a nice single action .44mag but not as protection
Even at point blank a hollow point is going to open up and parachute to a stop in the body. I don't think distance matters. It either penetrates enough to hit a vital after expanding or it doesn't.I'm not a hollow point guy but at those ranges it seems they should have taken down the bear. I'd like to see a detailed assay of bullet placement and damage done.

These are black bear. I have seen what the Barnes does to deer and I would feel ok using it for black bear. The .357 will do just over 2 feet in gel. I can't see a hollow point of any caliber being a good thing on an animal like a bear.
I didn't know that it did. Just skimmed the article. If it did, then Mac is going to have to include bear fur in his torture tests from now on.@Willjr75 what do you think about the Glock failing due to some bear hair? Haaaaa
The article seemed really detailed for a dude who was being used as a chew toy.I didn't know that it did. Just skimmed the article. If it did, then Mac is going to have to include bear fur in this torture tests from now on.
Didn't you read it? Everything was in slow motion. The article seemed really detailed for a dude who was being used as a chew toy.
