I've seen in some states they're just stopping the whole process all together but it seems most counties in NY are saying they're just not taking any new applications or fingerprinting. Sounds like anything you would have to go in for. Maybe some plan to finish processing the ones they have. I'm not going to get my hopes up, I'm just going to assume Albany county is shredding whatever applications they have and I'll have to reapply in a year or two.

All anti-gun govts (primarily cities but certain counties as well) will find it ridiculously easy to make processing pistol permits the lowest priority due to the current "crisis." This will go on indefinitely even after the virus has run its course.

Even in a pro-gun county like Livingston PP BGCs are the bottom of the list for priority.

The deputies all say that how long it takes to get a permit depends mostly on how busy they are with other stuff and how quickly your references respond.

And Livingston is practically shall issue.

Just turned in my application a couple weeks ago in Albany County. Haven't gotten any calls yet. I hear 8 to 12 months is what it usually takes here. With everything being shutdown cause of coronavirus will it now be longer? Since no trials are happening seems like it would be a good time for judges to catch up on some things they've been putting off.

Chances those are going to fall to the bottom of the list.
In any case we don't need pistols for a while since we are going to be at home so hopefully you already have a shotgun or something

Turned my permit into Broome County in Feb. No references called zip nada zilch. Tried to call just to "ask" if the process was moving forward, no answer. Originally was told 6 months by the deputy . I"ll be lucky if its a year.

The county sets the permit process. All the state law says is you need to be investigated prior to the permit being issued, so yeah, it is your county.

That's with them going back and interviewing family members, neighbors, friends, enemies and every babysitter you've ever had. Part of NY's gun control is to make it the absolute lowest priority possible to discourage people from applying. It also makes the people that do apply feel like they are doing you a huge favor by even accepting your application. The process is a result of knee jerk politics driven by sensationalism in the liberal media which is far more dangerous than good people owning guns. They should do this for the first amendment, force reporters to go through a lengthy application process which involves character references and background checks to get a news permit which may or may not be issued and if it is would likely be restricted to just local news. They also would not recognize any out of state news permits.

For some agencies handling permit applications, they have little to no full time staff assigned to the process. People who are on light duty/ office work get assigned the stack of backlogged applications and work their way through the pile. If no ones been on light duty recently, the regular office staff works on the process at a slower pace along with their other assigned duties. The same people doing permit applications are the same ones handling every other function of the civil / records division of the agency. The fingerprints alone take months to get a reply back from the FBI once they're submitted.

Yes but pistol permits are far from high priority and have nothing to do with high security.
With 2 people trying to process dozens of applications, it does take months in many cases.

I agree, doesn’t take weeks or months to do an FBI criminal background check. To do them for many people? Yes I can understand that.But not one person. Once they have your fingerprints it takes a matter of hours for your criminal history report to be available through the FBI. I have had many issues with NICS and I have had to submit fingerprints numerous times ,(story for another time),to get my criminal history report through the FBI.(there was no history in case you’re wondering). Anyways you submit them electronically and you have it in a couple hours , day or two max. The bulk of the time you’re waiting is because paperwork is sitting somewhere. The actual WORK only takes a few hours.
