Anyone into waterfowl hunting? I used to field hunt geese years ago, I was more of a tag along. I don’t have much knowledge about hunting geese. So I am looking to get back into waterfowling. I figure I can take my younger son with me, I bet he will be excited about going. Picked up a Remington versamax super cheap and I also have my 870 supermag as a back up. Any suggestion on where to start? I do have a layout bling coming. I’m not looking to start this season, just want to get prepared for next year.

When the geese are flying it’s a blast! When their not you’ll wish you were deer hunting. Hudson valley is a 2 bird limit so when it’s good you’ll be done by 7am and can still get to work. Early season was 15 bag limit but the geese weren’t here. Sometimes they are and it’s fun.

duck is always fun especially late season when your breaking ice to get to open water ( think bear grylls) it’s a challenge and you can be loud ect till they start flying. Don’t wait till next year just get out and do it.

Local farmer/friend want me to take some geese out. He said he had 100 in his front yard....I’m in a two bird limit area also. Told him I could hunt all November lol. I hunted on water twice....it was tough walking through the slop. I am thinking about trying a guide for snow geese in the spring. I don’t often see snow geese on the ground here, I see them really high flying by.

What size shot do you use on geese? Pretty sure I was using 3 1/2 BB back then.

never got into fowl hunting .. but do know some places you have to use steel shot ( no more lead shot) .. make sure your barrel can use it ..

I have modern shotgun so I am good to go. Steel can destroy older shotguns.

Everywhere you need to use steel for water fowl! They will check too so don’t cheat. I use 3” BB for geese and #2 for mallard #4 for wood duck I try and pick whatever is the fastest fps. Usually I use Kent

The past couple of years Ive been a tag along. This year I started buying stuff to hunt them myself. I bought a ALPS OutdoorZ Zero Gravity Layout Blind - No Floor and a bunch of silouette and sock decoys. Plus for duck I bought 12 floating Mallard decoys and a bag.

Yesterday me and an old time duck and goose hunter drove out to Oak Orchard Wildlife area to check out the place for some duck hunting. It was a good time,,,there was some guys hunting there. We didnt hear any shots but we saw plenty of ducks.

Sometime soon the old timer plans to get another dog and train it,,,,,,of course he asked me if I would take it if he dies. Which I would. So basically I will have a dog to use for duck hunting.

This September season I used the old timers Beretta A300 Semi auto (I have an 870 with a PatternMaster Choke), tagged along for a goose hunt with 6 young kids in their 20's. We shot 13 birds,,,I shot 6 out of the 13 and ended up with zero meat,,,,,,,,,,,ummm thats why I dont want to be a tag along.

One other thing I purchased was onXmaps for my phone,,,,to make it easier to know whose land Im looking at,,,when I see geese landing. Gives me name and address of the owner. Its 29 bucks a year for one state.


You are 1.5hrs away from me if you ever want to get together. Next weekend I believe I will be going to Oak Orchard (25mins west from me) by myself to do some fly by hunting,,,no decoys, just hide in the brush next to the marsh and see what ducks I can whack. Might bring maybe a couple of decoys,,,dont really know yet. Biggest thing Im worried about is not having a dog and just using my waders to fetch birds.


My old time buddy has flown all around the country hunting ducks and geese, Alaska, Louisiana etc.
He is a Bird Carver, he wins contests for decoy carving and regular bird carving. I have some of his carvings that I plan to add to my Man Cave when its finished in the basement

I was at Iroquois wildlife refuge on Saturday am and there were tons of birds flying and shots like crazy. Sometimes 8-10 shot streaks. I was pheasant hunting and no dice for me. Just walking through the field I could have shot some geese flying overhead. I do t have a fowl permit so I let them pass.
sounds like it could be fun. I have a kayak and live right by the niagara river. I thought about hunting them from a kayak no one will ever go with me though.

When I tagged alone, I kept what I shot lol. That is weird if they didn’t share. Do u think it’s worth getting my duck stamp this far into the season? Technically I don’t have my Versa max yet......my wife said I have to wrap it up till Christmas lol. I wouldn’t mind heading your way for some fun. You can also come out this way, I do have one field I can hunt. Have u ever hunted snow geese?

I just meant shoot from shore then paddle out to retrieve. There is a WLMA right on the niagara River where there is a sand bar. Many ducks and geese there. You could shoot them, paddle out, paddle back.

Dont you need a special permit to hunt waterfowl in Iroquois? Dont you also need to take a bird identification course to be able to get the permit?

I would pay the 25 bucks for the stamp if I could only go once This coming up weekend geese are back on the menu. So I will be shooting ducks and geese hopefully at Oak Orchard. I saw a shit ton of geese flying over Oak Orchard and seen a shit ton in the fields just out of Oak Orchard as we were leaving.

I love Duck and Goose hunting because you dont have to be quiet until you see them coming. You can shoot the shit, eat, practice your calls

I would suggest wearing chest waders though. I dont know how deep the water is. The guy I saw walking out to the area I plan to walk to was wearing chest waders. I want to make some duck, goose twinkies,,,,,breast meat stuffed with cream cheese and jalapeno peppers and then wrapped with bacon.

Sound good. My experience eating goose hasn’t been the greatest lol. I don’t own chest waders, after buy the shotgun and other stuff, it may be a little bit for I can get them. I am definitely interest in going but it might be next season

Next season is fine,,,,maybe by then I will be half way good at using my calls. Just so you know in case you wanted to get a pair,,,I bought my chest waders off amazon for a hundred bucks and they are realtree max 5 camo,,,,and they are good,,,there is a bunch on there that get good reviews that cost 99 to 150 bucks. I personally think he is at a great age to hunt with Dad. Learn a few things. Doesnt have to be quiet while waterfowl hunting. Learns how the birds come in by the direction of the wind. Learns how to setup decoy spreads to get them to land in the spot you want.
