Wasn’t me lol.I saw a guy pacing back n forth at herbs gun counter last week,, kept texting someone, probably begging the wife's permission to buy .
I can’t get out this weekend. I have too much to do. I’d like to go at some point. I need a choke and some ammo. I have chest waders.
Also I have no clue about the permit and waterfowl IF course. I know some places you do. I was pheasant hunting and brought my turkey calls just in case. I don’t even have a duck stamp so shooting ducks/geese was not an option. I could have for sure. Just not worth the risk obviously.
I have mostly field hunted for geese. I did two water hunts and it was a pain where we went. I know I have at least one field whenever I want it. I guess deer creek is good for ducks, I have only hunted pheasant there and never made it to the water area.I used to duck and goose hunt a lot Jay, 80's 90's and early 2000s. Eventually no one wanted to go with me, it's a lot of work and areas to hunt can sometimes be tough to find. Duck season opens kinda late for wood ducks anymore, they head south early. For the $25, the limits on large ducks like mallards, blacks and pintails get smaller and smaller.
Equipment- I had a good pair of warm neoprene chest waders. That water's cold in November. Warm parka with hood or rain jacket. Warm gloves and hat along with face net. Wading vest. Decoys, anchors and line for water, and decoy bag with shoulder straps. A bag or backpack for water and snacks is a bonus. I used steel shot, 6s for teal (skeet or IC), 4s for woodies (IC), 2s for larger ducks (Mod), BB or BBB for geese (Mod). Geese are tough, with thick feathers. You're shooting a world class athlete in top physical shape. Every try to jog to Louisiana in a few days? No dog, need boat or shallow water.
Best of luck and enjoy the time with your son.
I have hunted deer creek marsh a number of times. The water is a bog near the shore. If you go in the "back way"- forget the name of the road- it's steep downhill to the water.I have mostly field hunted for geese. I did two water hunts and it was a pain where we went. I hear you on tough geese. I remember shooting a couple and they never went down.
Is it always tough to hunt water? Bogs suck lolI have hunted deer creek marsh a number of times. The water is a bog near the shore. If you go in the "back way"- forget the name of the road- it's steep downhill to the water.
My opinion- mostly. A boat helps, but in the pitch dark- load the decoys, drag boat to water. Paddle out, set up decoys. Paddle back, drag boat onto shore, flip and cover. Shoot ducks, repeat boat action to retrieve ducks. About 10 am, shootings done, repeat with boat to get decoys. Is it always tough to hunt water? Bogs suck lol
Your last statement was my experience, all the shit under the water. I almost fell in multiple times. I had canvas waders so my mobility was terrible. I had a waterfowl inflatable tube thingy to help balance but it still sucked. My son would never make it through that mess.My opinion- mostly. I was younger then.
Waders and "shallow" water- wade very carefully, sunken logs, branches, rocks, junk to trip on and fall in. Not like walking across your lawn.
I musta been nutsYour last statement was my experience, all the shit under the water. I almost fell in multiple times. I had canvas waders so my mobility was terrible. I had a waterfowl inflatable tube thingy to help balance but it still sucked. My son would never make it through that mess.
