Hello All, New here and I'm sure this topic has come up before but I can't find it on forum. I don't want to over use my option to ship ammo to my friends house outside of the city, but practicing for Steel challenge and Bullseye has me going through a decent amount of ammo. At $30 a box in Manhattan, I might as well give up target practice. $8.99 a box online is great, but once again a limited option. Anyone else in NYC have someplace that isn't a 1hr ride to buy reasonably priced ammo. Alternatively, any Gun shops near Manhattan that will allow ammo to be shipped and pay a transfer fee? I guess we're also stuck with the issue of no more than 200 rounds per purchase? So frustrating. BTW, My favorite cheaper ammo for 9mm so far is the Sellior & Bellot 9mm 124g FMJ (for my Glock G34 gen5). Nice to meet you all in advance. Daso

Living in NYC you also have to worry about the amount of Ammo you have in the house|apartment. The NYFD says it’s no more than 200 rounds.
Thanks, I thought that was the NYPD rule, I did not know there was an NYFD component as well although I rarely even have that much.
As per OP, he lives in NYC.

As another member mentions.. NYC also has a restriction on how much ammo you can posses at your residents (NYFD code- limited to 200 rds .) That's a total of 200 rds. Not 200 in each caliber. So, a 500rd brick of .22LR is a no go in NYC.
And even if you were able to find a retailer that would ship to NYC (Manhattan) via FFL. Some/many NYC FFL may not help you with your ammo transfer because he looses the business of selling you the ammo on his self. I tend to think the LGS in NYC know they have you by the balls, so they'll charge what they want.
But let say you did find a FFL in NYC to handle your ammo transfer.. and you purchased 200rds (NYFD limit) you may still have shipping fee & FFL transfer fee. is it still cost effective? Suck to be in NYC (I left NYC a long time ago.)

All 100% true and severely limiting for someone who is into the sport of target or competition shooting. I guess my shipping Idea to a local dealer is out the window since you are absolutely right that i doesn't make sense for 200 rounds. That's why I would totally support a reasonably local shop that charges fair prices. Haha, hopefully won't give up shooting sports.

200 per household rounds is ridiculous, the last training I went to the wife and I brought 700 for the 2 of us.

No one follows or enforces that 200rd thing. It’s a fire code. It can literally only be enforced after the fact. As in, your house burnt down and the fire marshals find the remains of more than 200rd in the ashes.

If you're not shooting more than a few hundred rounds at a time you can get a reloading set up that will fit in a shoe box. A mounted press isn't necessary.
Well that does sound intriguing, I always wanted to but always thought too much hassle. I'm still a bit apprehensive about reloading at home but will look into it if I could really make such a small kit. I probably shoot about 150 - 200 rounds a week, unless competition. any suggestions?

This is how I got into reloading Lee Breech Lock Hand Press Kit I just wanted to see if I'd like it and now am addicted to reloading. At worst you'll be out $50 bucks if you decide it's not for you. At least for the setup. Then you would just need the bullets, power, primers and brass. If you compete you might even be able to get all the brass for free. I would suggest you start off with something simple like 9mm (if you own a 9mm). Get a pound of powder, primers, some bullets and brass. I don't know if the places around you sell any of these components but that would be ideal for the powder and primers. Load some up and try it out. If it's not for you, you can sell everything you have left over.
ETA: I forgot you'll need dies as well.
I'll seriously take a look into this. I guess I'm still apprehensive about where I'd store unused gunpowder. I guess next question is whether it's legal to order bullets, brass, primers and powder. I guess I can always drive to store.

In that case what's the penalty? Personally I've around 10k rounds in my place. Half that is 22lr though.

Sounds reasonable to me seeing they have to drive hours just to shoot a gun..
Luckily we still have a couple of ranges in the city. We definitely had more in past. Changed a lot in my past 30 years of shooting. I'm really considering this reloading option. But seriously, do I store unused gunpowder in the can under mybsink or in my closet. What do most people do?

It's really not that big of a deal. The primers and powder are the only things that aren't inert. Keep these two components in a cool dry place. Pretty much everyone keeps the powder in the container it came in. It comes in plastic airtight containers. And yes all the components are perfectly legal to buy since it isn't loaded ammunition. Funny thing is, is if you really want to adhere to the 200 round at a time thing you can load up 200 rounds and then have everything else on standby. So you could have 200 rounds of ammo but have the components to load up 10,000 rounds smh. Silly law. What caliber you think you'd wanna try first?
I guess, I could keep the powder in my closet, which is safe and removed. I'd probably start with 9mm, maybe eventually add some 45. I'll continue to buy 22. I guess I should you tube some videos of making 9mm ammo with a lee breech lock hand press. Never really thought this would be realistic, but It's starting to sound like it might be the way to go.

I'm reading this thread and am completely horrified as to the death by government micromanagement NYC people have to live under.
As far as the 200 round limit by the fire department. I can think of a lot of other flammable liquids people keep under the kitchen sink, candles (paraffin), hair gel, aerosol cans and crappy laminated furniture that are a bigger fire hazard than a 5000 round case of .22 ammo. Lithium ion batteries (new consumer product) are a bigger flammable hazard than ammo! Burning ammo is not a projectile hazard, aerosol cans throw off more shrapnel. As far a toxicity, ammo burns relatively clean compared to a closet full of polyester, rayon, spandex clothing plus all the other plastic crap in our houses/apartments (unless of course you own a Glock.)
So basically the NYC lawmakers are ignorant, paranoid and full of crap.
