Anyone fly with a pistol since CCIA?

Seems straightforward and I won’t be CCW’ing at a public space so it should be good to go. I’m going to Texas so no permit required and should be GTG.
I have a lock box with a key and the firearm will be unloaded, mags unloaded and ammo placed in original boxes in checked baggage. Firearm will be declared at ticketing counter in checked baggage per TSA web site. Firearm will have a flag in it so TSA can easily see it’s unloaded. Mags will be stored in the same case with gun but empty and only seems to be declared as loaded if a mag is inserted in the gun.
Anything I’m missing?

I am not certain if the ammo boxes also need to be in a locked container? When I fly with mine, I do what you have detailed, except that I also put my box with 25 rounds of ammo in the same locked container with my gun and empty mags. If you are carrying more ammo that is more than you can fit into that locking metal case (Mine is a Bulldog 1120), that is what I am not sure about. Also, I believe there is a weight limit (at least on some airlines, or perhaps by TSA) as to how much ammo you can transport. I thought it was 10 pounds?

Flew from Montana to Syracuse in May on United with no issues. Glock empty, mags empty and both locked in a case only I had the combo to. No chamber flag or anything like that.

In MT, told the counter I had a firearm, she had me open the suitcase and show her the locked case. She put a sticker on it that we both signed. Ammo was in a factory box with flaps taped down but not locked.

In 'Cuse, told the counter I had a gun and was waiting for the freak out but she just asked me to open the suit case and then open the locked case, she wanted to see there was no loose ammo in the locked case. I locked it back up, she put a new sticker on the locked case and that was it.

My understanding was only the gun needed to be locked up. Mags and ammo could be out but ammo had to be in a factory box, no loose ammo, ammo in baggies, ammo in mags or anything like that. Mileage may vary depending on airline.

It’s 11 lbs and it does it say ammo needs to be locked up. I just checked and I do t have room for the ammo unless I leave the mags stuffed and loaded or if I separate the mags from the gun in the case I can add the ammo. I may do the latter just so guns and ammo a locked up. Mags I do t think matter too much.

It seems they want ammo or mags securely boxed or included with the box your gun is in. It seems you can’t leave them in your magazine unless the magazine completely encapsulates the ammo. Maybe I won’t bring 5 magazines and only bring three then.

I take ammo in the clear MTM cases, never had a problem. I also take the slides off the pistol frame and have it in the same locked case.

That’s a good idea to separate the frame and slide. I think I’ll do that.

I’m not sure where a gun store is(easy to find I’m sure) and I’d rather have it on me and ready for the trip to the Airbnb. I’m renting a car so I can load up and be ready right at the airport.
My wife did the booking and it’s not a very safe area we’re heading to. I guess lots of random acts of violence/beatings so… I normally wouldn’t even bring it but that’s why. We will be outside a lot in a park fishing so I’ll be on high alert.

Yes, I flew through JFK to Nevada.

Plan at least an extra half hour through JFK as every firearm is inspected. I arrived at the desk and they called the Port Authority Police which sauntered over about 30 minutes later, asked me to unlock the case they cleared it by flagging absolutely everyone and we were escorted until the airline took possession of the bag at the overweight section. They took pictures of my permit and ID, not my gun though. When coming back, the airline held my bag until I took possession, police never showed up and I left. Overall smooth, it was nice not to lose a suitcase for once.

Come on man we’re doing background checks and screenings of them. They are all vetted. I get why they check to see if it is unloaded because you know some people are just stupid. Texas is a long drive or I’d be driving and avoid all this.

1) firearm unloaded in locked case
2) ammo separate in either factory packaging or mtm style case.
3) do not use magazines to store ammunition. The reason for this is that the airlines want the primers kept away from anything that MAY cause ignition.
4) print out the TSA regulations, specific airline regulations, as well as the safe harbor provision of the FOPA. If you plan on traveling this way frequently I'd have it laminated for survivability.

I checked it in at Buffalo and the agent just asked to see if it was unloaded. I told her there was a safety flag in it so it would be easy to identify and I opened the case for her to see. She immediately said ok, ok that’s fine and had me sign something saying it was unloaded. I picked it up in Texas no issues and the lady checked my ID. No TSA or cops on either side.
Im trying to check in for my flight but it won’t let me at this point so I don’t know if this is connected or not. I hope I make it back tomorrow but I can’t see what the issue would be since it’s legal in Texas and it’s legal for me in NY. Oh well. I just find it funny because my wife and son were able to check in no issues at all.

I got checked in just fine. This lady didn’t even ask me to open the case. She just had me sign a price of paper and place it in my checked baggage. She apologized about 5 times for the delay, there was no delay and she was wonderful. I think me telling them specifically the gun was unloaded and a safety flag was inserted in the chamber made a huge difference. Now in a few hours I get my bag and gun back in Buffalo NY so we will see how that goes.

Well Buffalo was even easier. I went to the baggage area to pick it up and show my ID and when I got there it was closed. So when that was closed I ran over to the baggage carousel to watch my fishing poles come out and the next bag was the bag with my pistol in it. I figured with that area being closed they would toss it on the carousel WTF!! Yes the bag is tagged to not place on baggage carousel but they did. I’m going to email or call them tomorrow and let them know what they did. I will ask for a supervisor to report this. I can’t imagine what would happen if someone walked away with my bag containing my pistol.

You don’t see this as an issue? I’ve seen many times where people take the wrong bags or bags get stolen. It said right on the bay don’t place on carousel and that indicates to people that there’s something in there.
The other consideration for this is I was happy to have the bag set asides since a good amount of my son and my fishing lures were in the bag. There was probably $2,000 in fishing lures and gear in that bag alone so if it was lost/stolen it would have been a big deal.

Agreed you can’t have it both ways. Not to mention what if I took 10 minutes to take a crap or were at the back of the plane and it took longer? My bag with my gun would have been out there. I can’t imagine the crap I’d have to go through if my gun came up missing and I don’t think they would care that it wasn’t my fault.

So I have flown a number of times with my EDC over the last 10 years. But this last time (this weekend) has been different so far.

Came up to visit my kids,- flew Charlotte to Cleveland on Frontier and then drove to Buffalo. I’m used to checking my bag in; telling them I have a firearm; they had me fill out and sign an orange declaration card that it is unloaded, etc., putting that in my suitcase, and then waiting around for TSA agent to come out to the ticket counter, take me into a back room to have me open the locked hard case with my EDC for them to inspect it, etc., and to then go thru TSA and board the plane. And upon arrival, to have to go to the baggage office at baggage claim and show ID in order to pick it up.

This time was a bit different.

Checked in at Frontier and declared it. Filled out the card, and put it in my suitcase. They said to wait around about 10 minutes before going thru TSA in case TSA would want to inspect it. They did call TSA, and put my bag on a “different” baggage conveyor than other people’s bags. No one from TSA came to inspect it or called me back either. Went thru TSA and boarded the plane. In Cleveland, went looking for Frontier Baggage Claim office to claim it, but hey were closed! And my bag was just on the carousel where anyone could have picked it up and walked off with it! WTF?

Not sure if the fact that my boarding pass was TSA Pre had anything to do with that as I have had that for years using my Nexus pass? Maybe TSA was short staffed? Or they have changed their procedures? Or maybe because I was flying into a “free state”?

Also visited a good friend who just got their permit in NY. He told me that the law in NY had just changed and now signs permitting concealed carry were no longer required as of a couple of weeks ago!!! I told him I was pretty sure that WAS NOT the case, and that he should be very careful. Anybody else in New Yorkistan hear anything about that?

I have not heard of that change to the law with signage and he should be careful.
Sounds like to me TSA changed their policy and neither of the people I checked my bags with told me to wait for TSA or called them to come out to inspect. They did make some notes on a computer screen and it appears to me they did open my bag both ways to inspect it some how. The case was locked so I don’t know how. I Also am 100% the baggage check ladies didn’t put the tag on that said don’t put on the carousel so some one else did that likely after opening my bag. I know someone opened it because the zippers were 100% closed and both times retrieving my bags the zippers were opened up about 2-3 inches. I’m fine with not showing the TSA my gun.
