Until they decide that stash of beans and rice in your pantry is "hoarding critical supplies" and come after you.
Should you/we care? Absolutely.
It's the most basic supply and demand capitalism. Someone wisely thought ahead or reacted faster than others and was penalized and abused for it, now having their personal property confiscated for "the greater good" which is terrifying to many.
The .gov fed boys now have a crap ton of executive orders from the Obama years basically giving them carte blanche to take anything they want from you in an emergency.
(Not to stray off topic but there are even executive orders on how to allocate civilian personnel to needed areas i.e. you and me to work camps or industry of their choosing)
Bought and paid for legally owned goods are being seized or dictated by the government what you can or can't do with them.
Anyone who has food, ammo, guns, water, medicine, livestock, resources should be very concerned.
It's a terrible scenario
Beans? I don't want to fart through a disaster. If I am going to stock up, it will be buckwheat. Healthy and tasty.

Just got (4) 55gal plastic drums today actually. Not sure if I will plumb them in somehow, or fill them and treat for storage.
No flour. The most common and popular way in this country is cooked and mixed with flat noodles. You can cook it and eat it with milk like cereal. Cook it and mix with beef stroganoff or similar dishes. You can also fry it in deep wok. There are infinite ways to prepare it. They now sell fast cooking buckwheat in pockets. Place it in boiling water for 20 minutes and it is ready.
My favorite is cooked buckwheat mixed with gravy. Hot, hearty and healthy meal.

This isn't aimed at anyone in particular, but I often See "preppers" doing mental gymnastics to prove they are superior to others.
The truth is, emp could drop, you get excited, run out in your tactical gear, slip ok wet grass, fall, and smash your heard on the driveway. No more ems so you're sol. Could happen to anyone.
Or more mundane. One rusty nail.
The grass hopper then comes along and takes the ants stash.

Buckwheat is one of the most easiest crops to grow. Farmers will grow it in poor fields to improve the soil. That said one has to dehull it. That seems to be an issue . The average person as not the means to dehull at home. I like having things in the home that if ransacked looters might leave it behind. Not knowing what to do with that item

That wasnt prepping back then. That was just normal life. The older generation remembered and lived in a time when refrigeration, and electricity, and running water was not available. They learned to live under those conditions. Storing and canning food, using a root cellar, and all the many options they NEEDED to use.
Problem is that now we are reliant on electricity, city water, supermarkets, etc. I use the same things and services, except i have backed up my property with a way to produce and renew food and water. I have chicken coups, turkey coups, an aquaponics greenhouse with tilapia and fruits and vegetables. Everything can run from back up power sources, if the grid goes down.
There are great books out there that go over and teach you all the skill that we have lost over the years, because of modern technology. The Foxfire series 1 thru 4, are very good place to start reading. I beleive there is even a book called, The forgotten ways, or something like that. Teaches all these forgotten skills, that we may need to know again one day.
It comes ready to cook. There are different grades as well. We only buy it in speedy pockets. Any leftover gravy and a pocket of buck wheat and walla a good meal. They even sell it at Walmart now. WAY OVERPRICED at Walmart. I buy it for 1/8 of Walmart price at NetCost Market.

Yes it's for healthfood fans.
NetCost Markets are great. They are opening new stores everywhere. Now in NJ and Philadelphia. Nothing in upstate yet, but you can order through internet. I save about 30% over shopping at any supermarket and selection of foods is much better then anywhere. About 10 types of caviar, any kind of smoked fish, foods from all over the world.

One of my Best Friends is/was a serious Prepper, built a very defendable Poured Concrete Home, had water collection, food stores, spare parts, oil/fuel, guns, ammo, medical supplies, personal, etc. pretty much everything one could need or want to keep his entire Family alive and going indefinitely, UNTIL that fateful day two months ago when a fire erupted in his Garage making the House unlivable and ruining damn near everything.
Now the point I want to make, is a reminder of "don't put all your eggs in one basket." It's not always possible or even practical to have a remote site, second house, camp, or whatever, but it is easy enough to sequester supplies with others, perhaps rent a Storage Unit....I knew a man that used old School Busses, Semi-Trailers, or even Box-Vans with the box set on blocks to store all sorts of things....I'm guilty of it too, but this fire has been a learning experience with lessons not to be taken lightly.

That is solid information right there, and not often thought about. I feel bad for your friend. It seems like you can try to prepare for anything and everything, and still be caught off guard. I hope insurance will pay for what he lost, but usually it never does. From how you described him in being a prepper, he must be taking it hard, i hope him and his family are alright.

Now that is a very good looking resource.
The thing about a root celler is that it would be a very valuable resource after the transition to the "post TEOTWAWKI" world.
Most people seem to prep for surviving the collapse, but not for living in the world long term afterwards.
I don't want 5 years of food stored. That just means you're screwed a few years later than most. I want a few months stored, then have the skills and resources to survive indefinitely after that.
So, rather than 5 years of beans and rice, have 5 months, and a garden full of fresh fruits and vegetables that you can rapidly expand for instance.
A root celler would be a very valuable resource in those circumstances. Even with a good off grid solar plant, it won't last forever. Your batteries will go first. Eventually you'll lose refrigeration. That root celler could be your lifeline in those circumstances.

I have this book.... Covers a lot of material... Talks about the need for a dirt floor to provide humidity . The need for ventilation and a way to adjust this .. one inflow at the bottom and one outflow at the top Should have 2 different rooms for types of vegetables and fruit
. All fruits and vegetables emit ethylene gas, some more so than others. This causes other fruit and vegetables to spoil as well if they are in the vicinity. Therefore, wrapping fruit like apples and pears in paper is helpful to keep the surrounding produce fresh. .
