I finally got around to handing in my forms to Putnam County. Lady behind the counter told me to expect a 15 month wait.

I had Purchased a pistol and put information on the form as a firearms dealer informed me that it could could take another 4-6 weeks after getting permit to add a pistol.

Lady informed me that as I was not Law Enforcement my permit would now come with pistol added that I would have to go back and fill out a form to have pistol added after the fact.

Joyce is awesome as are all the ladies back there. Keep them smiling and laughing and your amendments will be 3-5 days as my last 3 were :)

I wish that were the case. I dropped off an amendment on 11/7. Joyce told me 4 weeks due to holidays/vacations. I'm still waiting, but hoping to hear something this week.

I live on Long Island. Years ago (4) I started to process of getting a pistol permit. I got five (5) friends to vouch sign/references.
I never follow through with the process.

Just wondering are those reference still any good. If not, what is the process for getting a pistol permit post NY unSAFE act. Are the forms uniform for all NY counties.

Generally, the state tries very hard to break one off into you.

Most counties will not accept the reference form if the notary stamp has expired. Some counties will not accept anything (proof of training, references, money orders) that are more than a year old (most bank money orders are only good for 6-9 months IIRC)

When I was a gunsmith, I had to do the same application you did every 2 or 3 years. One year my packet was rejected - not because of any fault of mine. The dude said "by the time this gets to the investigating officer the notary stamp would have expired". It was APRIL. Gunsmith licenses back then renewed at the top of the year (Jan). The notary's commission expired that November.

The kicker? Dude was letting me know this in JULY, and advised me that on re-submission I would not get approved in time to continue working as a gunsmith.

I pretty much give up on this state. Not worried about pistol permit. Even when you get one, you have to walk on eggshells. NY govt will do any/everything to strip you of your permit. There are ~43 other (free) states I can move to. And to process for a pistol permit is on par of getting a library card.

PA for instance. In and out in 20-30 minutes. No amendments, no listing of guns on your permit, NFA items allowed, etc.

They tell you worst case scenario So you aren't freaking out! 15 months in PC which has recently added an additional 2 judges to handle the workload doesn't make sense when it wasn't that long prior. But who knows how much more applications are being processed now as compared to before, the election caused quite a stir and concern, many people I know from PC who didn't have permits were going for them with the threat of Hitlery becoming POTUS. Anyways...

But yes, some things have changed in PC. You want to be lucky and have your papers get to Reitz desk, not because he doesn't care or is not paying attention, but because he is fair and does pay attention. He's not politically motivated in his application of his powers and does the right thing regardless of the environment around him. PC is very 2A friendly, I would bet you'll hear back around 10-11 months from now. As for the amendments, last year around holiday time it got real busy there as well, like I said, very friendly county and there were a very large number of amendments during the holidays : )

Keep the faith, not all NY is bad, hope though that the insanity of NY and Westchester does not infect PC with the influx of recent immigration northward.

Received a letter today, Just over 7 months from dropping off application. Letter states to please call Sheriff Office to schedule appointment for "photograph, fingerprint and interview".

I called them and first available appointment is early August.

What does the interview entail?

When I dropped off application, I filled out details on a pistol that I have purchased and is stored at dealer location. Lady at Sheriff's office told me I was wasting my time as this pistol would not be added to my permit, I would have to apply after receiving permit.

Handwriting at the bottom of the typed letter I received states "Bring proof of weapons" ?

Odd. Pistol permit is handled through the pistol permit department in the county clerks office in carmel. Joyce is the head cheese there give her a call to ask. I never had to deal with any sheriff office. In Dutchess I had to deal with the sheriffs department when I transferred my permit for the time I lived there. But for Putnam it was always handled through the county clerk and the pistol department in the county clerk building . My only interview was in front of a judge to receive for full carry unrestricted, and all I told him was I carry money to the bank at the end of the day for my employer (which was total bullshit lies)I don't know how they do it nowadays that was going back to the to the mid 90s. I call Joyce just to see if she can help you with any of this.

Its been a few years since my interview . When i went someone brought me into the back and took my picture then fingerprinted me, then a detective took me i to an interview room and basically went over my application, told me to make sure to make sure the info was accurate. It was fast and easy.

Quite a different way then the 1990s for sure..but that sounds like the answer he needed.

Totally different from back in the early 80s when I got mine. I attached a copy of a receipt for a handgun I just purchased to the application. Reason on the application was just three words: Hunt, carry, collect. No interview at all. I don't recall the length of time it took to receive the permit, but it was unrestricted right from the get-go.

I dropped of application on October 2016. Only one of my references is from Putnam, the others are Westchester, this was not a problem.
I had my interview / fingerprints August 2017. My references received the letter the following day.

I took the class at Adaptive shooting in Pawling, they informed me if I bought a pistol and added it to my application that it will get added to my permit and save another several month wait to add.

When I dropped of my application they told me only LEO can add pistols and I will have to apply to add weapons after receiving permit.

The letter I received from the Sheriff for the interview had in handwriting at the bottom "bring proof of weapons"

I brought the receipt for handgun, the took a photocopy and added it to my file. The Sheriff said it should be on permit when I get approved.

They told me it could be another few months.

I finally got a call from Clearks office that my permit was ready to pickup. I had my pic taken, thumb print scanned and paid $10, the lady handed me my permit with my previously purchased pistols already entered. Permit is Sports Person. She give me "coupons" to allow gun dealer to release the guns.

This must be nice. Shit even with my unrestricted license here in Chemung, every time I ask if I can get a purchase ticket (let' say I was going to go to a gun show in Syracuse or no reason at all) they keep telling me no they refuse to do that. But then again they only issue unrestricted licenses here in Chemung unless the applicant asks for restrictions so trade offish..
