So what i need to make (from scratch) is a semi auto pistol grip 26 inch "other" that takes shotgun shells is tube fed and another that is mag fed.....
Or as far as I can tell, an ar "pistol", with an overall length of 26"+, with a detachable magazine, flash hider, forward grip, barrel shroud, and an unloaded weight of 75 ounces.
But just to reiterate, I am not a lawyer, I did not stay at a holiday Inn last night, and I am not sure enough about how I am reading the law to have built my own yet. I keep planning on going to talk to a lawyer about it, but things keep getting in the way.

Why 75 oz? It is not an "assult weapon". Not a pistol. Not a rifle. Not a shotgun. . Should have zero limits

I think it was a joke. You can make it weigh 25 pounds and it doesn't matter because it can never be an AW since it isn't a firearm.
75 Oz because it is over the 50 Oz limit that nys sets, but still a nice manageable weight.

Nothing. It's neither a rifle, a pistol, or an AOW and is legal in my opinion and cannot fall under AW laws.

They'd have to amend the law or say that it is a rifle. If they do, it is easily defendable by both their definition and the federal one.

You can build it yourself from a stripped lower marked as other.
Yeah, for me it came down to a question of would nys still classify it as a pistol. I know the federal government does not, but hadn't read into the supremacy clause saying for certain that ny would be bound by the federal definition of a pistol since they fail to define it in the penal code.

NY has no definition on what a pistol is so I would think they would have a hard time classifying it as such.

The million dollar question is this. Can a firearm that has been converted into a rifle be converted back into a firearm.
I know you can with a pistol but not with a rifle.

I would agree, I guess I just haven't had the stones to do it yet. Let me ask you this, assuming the gun in question had a mag lock installed so that ny safe isn't part of the equation would you be comfortable building something like this and taking it to a public range without having it on your pistol permit?

In all reality, with a Thordsen Stock equipped AR, I can manipulate it just as well as one with a pistol grip and a forward grip. So for me, it isn't worth the hassle.
IMO, a pistol is better as it is concealable and can be carried loaded in your car if you so desire.Also convertable back and forth to a rifle with no change in designation.

I agree but I'm a huge critic of the fixed magazine on the AR platform. It's clumsy, dangerous, and not suited for practical use.

Well for whoever cares, I went with a New Frontier 9mm lower. One that accepts Glock mags. It just makes the most sense for what I do. I shoot to much to pay for 300 aac, I can't shoot my steel at the distance I'd like to with 223/556, and I currently own 4 glocks all in 9mm. It took a little more research and will probably cost a touch more in the end but it'll be what I want.

It makes sense to me. I don't see myself engaging targets over a hundred anyway and with a 16 inch barrel, it has the ballistics of a 125 gr .357 Magnum.
Plus cost is another major factor as you've said.

My thoughts exactly. I figured a pistol build was a good starting point. I can always change it to a rifle upper if I want to.
I dislike the thordsen stock, but that's personal preference. Going with a not a pistol ar pistol would let you have all of the other features that are included in this mess.
If you build a safe act compliant pistol that is true, but if you go the way of the 26"+ oal not a pistol route, I don't believe you would be able to.
That would mean you could carry it loaded, but it would have to be loaded with a fixed 10 round magazine.
You can't argue that it isn't a pistol and there fore not subject to the safe act while at the same time argue that for it should be treated like a pistol when convient.

I don't see the need to be in the middle ground. If I'm building a pistol then a short barrel (8"-10") fits the overall objective just fine. If I want more of a shooter then 16" should work just fine.
Carrying it loaded doesn't do much for me. That's why I own handguns. Also I don't see the need for a truck gun. Not in this state at least. If I make it to my truck then I'm going to drive it away.

Hey BulletGuy.. Can I bring the lower home as soon as the 4473 is complete? I don't need the coupon before I can take possession of the lower because it's not a pistol yet correct? It just can't be built until I have the coupon and the lower is officially on my permit?

I did my ammendment before I picked up the lower. While technically you are correct a stripped lower is not a pistol, if you don't do the ammendment during the transfer process how else would you add the lower to your permit?
