They sell a variety of target crowned uppers. some with very high quality barrels.

i bought an 18" wilson upper. Came with an 18" wilson bull, yhm handgaurd, hpt\mpi bolt, all assembled on a Spikes upper.

Here is literally a thordsen for $49

Get a la mbt trigger, a psa $89 lower build kit, a $29 psa stripped lower, and your sights of choice.

What do you want to do with this rifle anwyay? For popping soda cans at 25-100 yards literally anything will work. Ar, scr, mini-14, sks, saiga, pc9, etc. Do you want it for personal defesne? You might have to think about future light and optics mounting options.


A lot of people don't understand that a rack grade m4gery with a mil spec trigger probably isn't going to be a laser target rifle.

@drilling , based on your lack of commentary on the Fightlite SCR, I’m guessing looks may be a factor.

Check out this option instead. It’s a pump action AR. You’ll retain looks and the ability to change magazines and clear malfunctions at a slightly slower fire rate.

This is a long review but it’s pretty thorough. The guy is pretty respected in the gun community and gave it great reviews. Fast forward to 26:45 in the video to see that you can really shoot it pretty fast.

The poor ol' milspec trigger gets so much flak.
Its adequate, you can learn it, it's cheap and comes with the gun in the first place.

That being said I freakin' love my LaRue MBT trigger, really excellent feel AND I haven't had any problems lighting off hard primered milsurp ammo with it.

They work ok for me. It's a crap shoot anyway. sometimes you get one thats not bad and 5 lbs, and sometimes it's a gritty seven pounds.

I was thinking more it sounds like the OP doesn't have much rifle shooting experience. New shooters often struggle with poor triggers.

The triggers on the Daniel Defense rifles are quoted as "milspec" but is actually much nicer than any issue M16 I've ever shot. There is some grit in the take up and the pull is somewhat heavy but the break is clean and crisp and the reset is nice and positive, with no over travel.
I replaced it anyway 'cause you are just 'supposed to.

I have both the m&p 15 and 10. Bought them in NJ configurations and added a spur grip. Done. They shoot great and have given me zero issues. I've put a good amount of rounds through the 15 without a hiccup.

I actually went to LGS to shoulder some rifles.


First of all, Thordsen AR-15. In real life, even more hideous. So no.


Mini-14. Kind of a disappointment. I was hoping for a M14 cool ass rifle, but it's kinda tiny and with all the comments about how it sucks compared to AR-15, I was like nah man.


Ruger 10/22. Actually pleasantly surprised. Cheap price of $230 for the carbine version with wood stock. Only a bit smaller than mini-14 but 1/4 theprice. (I know, it's 22lr) I might pull trigger on this one. It might not have any kick at all, but I have O/U trap gun for that.

A 10/22 or marlin model 60 is perfect for you. Learn to shoot bottle caps and shotgun shells off hand at 25-50 yards and you're well on your way to becoming a practical shooter with skill.

He's all, "ooooh it's my first rifle I want it to be worth while, but I live in a ban state and I don't understand the laws..... but I want an M16 that is NY compliant but I don't want the options that make it NY compliant and I'm "OKAY" with having to have a ten round magazine....I have no idea what I want or what I am talking about but everything you guys are suggesting is wrong, so I'm going to get a 10/22", lol! yes PLEASE JUST GET A 10/22 AND SHUT THE FUCK UP.

You know what, @drilling I'm sorry I wrote the above statement. It really wasn't called for at all. I was in a bad mood and just shouldn't have posted anything. @Willjr75 was right, someone forgot to feed me my kibble. You are entitled to like what you like and have your opinions about things. I hope you do like the 10/22, it's a fine rifle and you won't be disappointed with it. Again, please accept my apologies.

@drilling, I think you mentioned cost was no object so please buy this Volquartsen Custom VM-22. It is a 10/22 that contains no parts or items whatsoever by Ruger:

The price is extreme (for a .22) but buy it anyway so we can all live vicariously through you.

P.S. the muzzle device is a no-go in NY but you can order one without it.

It is a really nice rifle. I want one too. So sexy.
