AR drop in trigger assemblies

I have invested quite a bit, for me, in an upper assembly and was thinking that maybe a better trigger than the one that came with the lower might be in order. Being largely ignorant on the brands, cost, or even it will make a substantial difference in improving accuracy, I am asking for some help.

Give this a read. Basically if for competition, a 2 stage is superior. For all other purposes, a single stage suffices.

Yes, I did read that before I posted, I'll probably go with the 'two stage' format. Reading a lot of stuff, trying to get myself up to speed, which makes me ask other questions, which I search answers for. Fun though.

LaRue's MBT trigger is around $89. Its a nice 2 stage trigger, really nice feel to it. It's supposed to be the equal of a Geiselle 2 stage and were priced to match but have dropped since the holiday door buster deal.
Really there are countless really good trigger options for ARs.
Single stage is typically considered better for rapid aimed fire. 2 stages are considered better for precision but all things are relative.
For single stage Hiperfire is well known for there speedy and complex triggers and they also have a simpler duty grade trigger the EDT which I have and like.
There are also one piece chassis style drop ins like the KE Arms SLT:

I have a few J.A.R.D. Brand drop ins. Timney makes a good one as well. You will want to use anti-rotational trigger and hammer pins with them.

like i said, very rarely here about them but i liked it over the two stage geisselle i had.

I also use the saber trigger on my 3 Gun rig. I like it a lot. Nice clean break. On my AR9 and a couple othe rifles I have the Rise Armament super sport 3.5 on trigger - also very nice.

I just installed my first real trigger upgrade. Bought a timney, couldn't be happier.


It's a single stage at 3lbs. It's a vast difference over milspec triggers. Only in my gun for a couple days now. Here's a quick video of the minimal movement and reset. It is great.

I just installed my timney with the stock pins. I adjusted and locktight the set screws on the timney and I can't budge my pins. You have an issue with your pins falling out?

No I just didn’t like the set screws.

I gotta tell you I did struggle with them set screws because of the hammer springs being in the way. If I was doing it again I would probably opt for the anti rotation pins.

They're pricey but I'm a Geissele fan through and through. I got their Super Dynamic Combat trigger for one of my 5.56 builds and was nothing short of awed by the trigger. Well worth the money in my opinion. Other triggers are probably just as good for me my next two builds (a .223 Wylde and a 6.5 Grendel) will both have Geissele triggers in them.

My primary use will be long range target shooting. I will be hunting with it as well, thats why I was thinking a two stage trigger might be better, like the idea of a 2+2. I have bought and made many double set triggers but mostly I make a single trigger with a blade that is in direct contact with the sear lever, spending a great deal of time making it light, 3-4 pounds yet able to hold the hammer at full cock with no chance of slipping out of the notch, a real balancing act. These, single and two stage set up's all seem pretty straight forward with no tweaking needed on my part.
So it seems like, in the end it's a matter of the amount spent. I keep hearing the phrase that Eddie Gunks uses quite often echoing in my head, "buy once cry once". There is a huge difference in price between say the JARD and a Timney or a Geissele . Is there a big difference in quality, longevity, something I'm not getting? Robin if you are using it for long range this would be the trigger I would suggest because I have 2. Geissele SSA-E,,,,,,,,,,Its a beautiful 2 stage trigger,,,2nd stage breaks like you are breaking a tiny icicle. I'm sure there are comparable ones out there. If you planned on buying the one I mentioned it would be nice if you could wait,,,,they sell for 180 on Black Friday and they might sell for the same at other times of the year. Giessele G2S works fine in my book. I mostly do target shooting, and find it matches any of my bolt guns, which isn't necessarily saying a lot, as on a bad day I can miss with any of them...

Seriously, i find it to be a superior trigger.

Never measured either one so this is all on usage. Actually recently built a gun for a friend and recommended and installed the RRA Varmint.

So many people recomend this trigger it must good. I would point out that the Larue MBT is about the same price now and it us supposed to compare favorably with the Geissele SSA.

Plus I am duty bound to point out fuck Rock River Armory for the shit they pulled alongside Springfield Armory in Illinois.
