So I got the itch to build and midway has some solid prices on a 7.62x39 and 5.56 kits. Anyone have any recent experience with the kits?

Stoner makes good parts, never heard of an issue.

Hi,
Stoner is not made by Midway. It is a brand name Midway created based on OEM parts from different manufacturers.
Midway doesn't manufacture anything not have a way to test all this equipment same thing with PSA, model 1 and many
others. They are just retailers. A few years back when the 5.56 stoner bolts started to break they
recalled hundreds of them. Someone messed up during the heat treatment process. That is the nice thing about midway in terms of returns and replacements, they do have good customer care but again, they are not manufacturers.
Some Stoner stuff is ok and some other stuff not so good. The stainless barrels are pretty decent.
I think one could put together a decent 5.56 but not sure it would be the best value for the money.
Regarding the 7.62x39 I would not go with them. By design, these bolts are not up to the task unless otherwise specificied
and not many people are making them to last.
The best 7.62x39 id made by ARP... 16" 7.62x39 Scout profile barrel- 4150 CMV
I would choose the X750 bolt and extension for a bit more moeny but even the other bolt is beefed up and
stronger than the average due to the additoinal radious aroudn the lugs and the 9310 alloy.
They will not break unlike many other kits.
For the 5.56 try to avoid carbine ported barrels and 1/2" threads that are too thin like those M4 style.

Ss barrels seem to come from douglas
That are ok.
The issue with the 7.62x39 specifically is the bolt.

The majority of brands they do not manufacture their stuff including parts and internals.
One might order a trigger group from Delton to be the same milled for colt and rra.
The issue is that there is no easy way of knowing if it is low end or actually good quality until it is identified.
For example some of the SS Stoner barrels made by Douglas are pretty well priced and well made.
Other parts might be the same as other top brands the issue is to know where the parts come from.
Like for example Young Manufacturing makes bolts for several brands. They are all the same bolts with
different brands and these are some of the best bolts one can buy. No matter what brand you buy it
from they are not going to be the cheapest but perhaps one w/o the skull tacticool logo might be better priced
yet still the same top quality.
I bought magazines with the stoner brand that are made by C products SS well made and cheaper but
the same magazine. I can tell by the internal markings since I also got C products.
So one might get pretty good stuff and good prices. The key is to be smart about what to buy and
ask others and check the stuff out.

I looked at their buffer tube assembly on Midway's site. Reviews were pretty good, but a handful of people said they had issues with either the threads, or some wobble with the butt stock they'd chosen. A little thing like that would drive me right up the wall, yet even perfectly fine with many others. Consensus seemed to be that quality was decent for the price.

I agree with the driving you nuts part. I have a Magpul stock attached to a I dont know brand name buffer tube. It moves a tiny, tiny bit,,,I notice it every time I grab the gun out of the truck before hunting. Bugs the shit out of me for about 1 min,,,then I forget about it.
I have the same exact stock on a different buffer tube and it doesnt move at all.
