Well looks like the Army is kind of following suit of the Marines and have adopted a LPVO to replace their Trijicon 4x ACOG

Unlike the Marines who adopted the Trijicon VGOC 1-8x, the Army has awarded Sig the contract for an undisclosed 1-6x optic

The Army is officially getting a brand new rifle optic for the M4A1 carbine

The Army awarded Sig Sauer a contract for a Direct View Optic, which will allow soldiers to quickly switch between 1x and 6x magnification.

So the ACOG is coming in at about 16.2oz so only 5.3oz less than the Vortex 1-10..

But the VCOG is 15.3oz heavier.. damn near a full pound. Which yes having more versatility with a 1-8 but idk if its worth the extra pound in weight, especially with a solid optic thats only 5oz heavier

My 1-4 burris mtach is like 13 oz with a battery.

My now departed primary arms 1-6 was like 27 oz. I couldn't see putting up with the weight when I could have a 3-10 mil dot for almost half the weight. Plus the optics were piss poor and the ocular wouldn't stay tight.


I have some Japanese 1-3x weavers that are like 11 oz. I love them for a light set up.


I think we will the weight on the lvpos start coming down with better internals and technology.

Holosun was for a while. Sig was just rebranding all the stuff Holosun didn't sell under their name..

Sig optics were no different than Bushnell or vortex or primary arms and the list goes on, all the micro red dots that looked the same but had different brand names on them including sig, they were just Holosun optics.

Then sig decided they wanted to set up their own optic factory or something and put out trash like the Romeo micro red dots and shit.

Their rifle red dots I guess are ok for the price point as in for your average Joe plinking or maybe HD / hunting.. but I wouldn't put them up against an Aimpoint or Trijicon (though many people will say they are equal or better but thats laughable)

As for actual scopes. I have no clue where they get them or if they make them.. but again based on history I've seen with the company they really just try and push entry level optics into a duty role by just saying hey we are Sig

They get their magnified optics from somewhere in the Philippines, but I'm not sure which factory. Might be the same one vortex uses for the diamondback line.

If that's the case, I'm not impressed there either. Vortex is known for their great warranty for a reason.

Only thing I'd snag up from vortex is their gen 3 razor HD 1-10 (maybe the gen 2 1-8 maybe, also their monster holographic sight seems solid enough and neat but that style of optic doesn't intrigue me enough to care)

Depends on which Vortex for sure. Razors are made in Japan. Some of their super high ends are even usa. Vortex is just a distributor making a mass of scopes as cheaply as possible on their lower end stuff

I wouldn't touch another diamondback or viper. They even admitted to me that they used thin scope tubes to reduce cost when warne rings suggested 20-25 inch pounds crushed my first diamondack. They told me their tubes can only take 15-18 inch lbs. That's insane. Just a name on cheap optics that only have a good rep for their warranty. (Which they did replace mine, no questions asked. I asked why it failed.)

I'm not knocking Phillipine manufacture either. My burris scopes are tough as woodpecker lips.

I like the trijicon ACOG better on my M4. Those sights are pretty clean.

FFP rocks as it requires zero calculations on the operator's part at different zoom levels, but most FFP scopes out there in the market just can't handle the constant zooming in and out that I have seen. Jury is still out on this piece of hardware.

The problem with FFP is you need a properly designed reticle for it to be useful. You don't want a reticle that is all coarse at maximum magnification and invisible at 1x. The Eotech Vudu is an example of a great LPVO FFP reticle. The Nightforce NX8 is an example of a not so great reticle.
For most LPVOs you won't be using the reticle for holds or ranging at less than full magnification so SFP is fine.

So ounce again the military are adopting civilian competitive shooting solutions ... but we shouldn't have guns because we don't know what we are doing ... I still think for home defense aka QCB nothing beats a red dot. but a 1-8 has allot of practical uses the only down side being eye relief and I'm not a big fan of FFP on certain reticals.

the price point on the Trijicon 1-8 x 28 FFP isn't that bad compared to others.

Can you see a target @ 600 yards through iron sights? even those that can won't be able to make out any details, just an outline of a shape.
A skilled shooter can take an M4 equipped with an 1-6/8 scope out to 600 yards and Mk262 ammunition still has lethal effect at that range.
LPVOs are a force multiplier.
