Around the house gun

In another thread I mentioned that I got a smoking deal on an M&P Shield 9mm that I planned on using as an around the house gun that I would wear, well, around the house. I got the one with the thumb safety just for that extra level of safety as I have a five year old terrorizing the joint. I thought about it after the fact and decided I'd rather have some sort of passive safety instead. If it came time to use it I'm not sure I'd remember to disengage it under duress. I was thinking something with a grip safety like the Springfield xd mod2 subcompact or just the 4" version. Just in case something got in the trigger guard, or if my little guy accidentally grabbed the trigger or whatever. I know, with a good holster those things should never happen, but shit does happen and I'd just like a little extra protection from Mr Murphy. I've held the 4" version and it was nice, but it might be a bit big to tool around the house with. What do you think? I'd love the EMP4 contour, but that's a bit much right now. Hell, I'm not even 100% sure I'm going to be approved for my pistol permit.

What's the question? As a carry gun the shield is fine just not my preference. If you're asking about the external safety it will be fine if you train with it. With any firearm you need to train.

The Shield with external safety has all the passive safeties as the other version. If you are concerned about it you can simply not engage the safety. It is safe to carry it thay way. I would also recommend a larger, easier to handle gun than the Shield for dedicated house use. I keep my PPQ bedside but I also keep my Shield on my hip all the time during the day. Also keep the AR or Mossberg under the bed ready to go but that may not be a good option for you.

Train with it. Everytime you draw you thumb the safety off, everytime you holster it thumb the safety on before sheathing it. After a while it will be second nature.

The 1911 was my one and only gun for a long time. At least 3 or 4 times at the range while shooting the shit I have forgotten to disengage it before firing. I'm sure it's happened to everyone here at least once.

If I'm drinking, half asleep, or punch drunk from getting hit on the head, I don't want to possibly forget to disengage it.

For around the house consider an ALS holster from Safariland. They have absolutely outstanding retention (for the little guy) and are very very comfortable since it is OWB. I use several different versions of the 7377 series and have no regrets. Faster draw than any IWB as a bonus. They have a belt loop option or, what I prefer, the paddle option which just slides over the pants/belt.

I hate grip safeties. If I had to have a saftey at all, give me a small, unobtrusive but easily accessed thumb safety with very positve action. Like what they put on the Shield.

The 1911 one is fine, but the XD one feels like a rough plastic seam abrading the webbing of your hand. But I severely dislike XDs to begin with.

I have an Xd45 and that has not been my experience.

Okay, glad you dig em, many do. I don't like XDs, never have, never will. To me the grip feel like holding onto a cheese grater.

That's what I'm worried about. I do it with my other guns as well.

I can't remember if I got finger printed for that. Probably, they did everthing just shy of an anal probe. And that came later on.

Then there's no sense using that gun. I'd be better off using the Glock or whatever whatever else I'd have that doesn't have an external safety. The thing is, I'd want that extra safeguard. Again, it really should not be relied upon, but the same adage we always use applies here. I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
