ATF being sent to homes that purchased multiple firearms to verify they still possess them

I’m not sure how I would handle this. One thing I know is I wouldn’t let them in so I may bring them out for review, but I’d ask hey can I take a picture of the serial numbers on my cell phone today to show you I still possess them? I just don’t want cops/authority entering my home for no reason.

Personally, Id make sure to record the entire encounter. Id specifically ask them for a warrant and respectfully decline to accomodate them provided I was not required to do so by law.

Id call a lawyer after this interaction and be ready for a not so friendly follow up visit/harassment.

If a person purchases 2 or more handguns within a 5 day period a multiple pistol report gets filed with the ATF by the close of business that day. A copy also goes to the local PD and a copy stays with the FFL. The guns are listed on the form by Make, Model, and Serial Number, that's how the ATF knew what guns the guy was supposed to have. Granted you can buy a gun at dealer A and a second gun at dealer B and nobody knows the difference but if you get 2 from the same dealer that dealer files the report. Typically the only record of make, model, and s/n is the 4473 you fill out so the ATF doesn't know who has what without a dealer audit.

This isn’t at all new, so I’m not sure why the video is getting so much attention. It’s listed on the ATF’s website. 2 or more handguns or multiple (forget number) of certain rifles (e.g. AR 15s) for the states bordering Mexico. It’s their attempt at stopping straw purchases.

Right after I got my pistol permit I bought a Glock 19 and a Shield. When I picked them up at FFL they had to fill out a little report and I believe they also sent it to NYSP. Never got a call or knock on my door.

I’m sure there is a priority level, like if you buy 6 Glock 19s they’re going to come check you out, whereas simultaneously buying a j frame and a CZ Shadow is much less likely a straw purchase.

That actually happened at my home many years ago. I recall them attempting to look past me and into the inside my home as I stepped outside barefoot and in my shorts in somewhat freezing cold weather. Then they gave me the old “we’d like to talk with you…wouldn’t you be more comfortable inside in the warmth…and wouldn’t you rather we talk inside where your neighbors can’t see us talking…?”

I would question the worth of that legal advice. If they come to your door without a warrant, you should say "Have a nice day, I have nothing to say to you, please leave now" and shut the door. Better yet, don't open the door in the first place. " Who is it ?" [Agent Schmuckatelli of the ATF] " Do you have a warrant ?" [No, I just want to ask a few questions] "I'm not answering anything. Goodbye."

If you step outside, they can detain you. Without a warrant, they can not if you don't allow them inside and you don't go outside.

Never volunteer any information to law enforcement.

Honestly your best bet, is to simply dial a lawyer. There is nothing you can tell the police that will benefit you. They may not be bad people, but you have everything to lose even talking to them other then "I'd like to speak to my lawyer." Cooperate, but speak to your lawyer only. Have their number memorized, and call it if need be.

Two or more handguns triggers a "Multiple Sales" Report which is a Form the Dealer fills out and Faxes to the FBI.
The other thing could be the ATF is investigating the Dealer: Clerks and Dealers have been known to add additional guns to 4473's ones that the purchaser did not acquire. At the time the 4473 is filled out, the FFL is required to write the number of guns/frames actually transferred. so if you bought three guns there had better be only three listed (Make. Model, Serial number, type, and caliber) and the word "THREE" in the block below it.
I have no more idea what exactly transpired other than what's played in the video, but I do understand that not everything in a Govenrment intrusion or fishing expedition.

I can't tell you how many multiple pistol forms I faxed over through the years and I never heard of one person getting a visit. That includes upwards of 10 pistols on more than one occasion. I'm sure we're all on multiple lists among multiple agencies and don't forget, Alexa and Google are always listening

I can empathize.. Its happened to me right here in NY state.. I thought I had lost my Sig P938, and like a "good citizen", I reported it to the county sheriff dept.. Within 1/2 hour, they were at my door, demanding to see ALL my handguns.. Not wanting to create more trouble than I already had [ remember I was missing a loaded pistol], I capitulated.. guy had a list of everything I owned, and checked all serial #s etc.. THAT is what NY gun registration is all about..

Turns out my wife had put my P938 in her pocketbook, thinking it was her P238.. it was never "lost" at all.

Trying to do the "right thing"?-All it got me in this tyrannical police state, is an "in home visit", demanding to show every handgun I owned, to a cop with a note pad and checklist.... They weren't nasty, and seemed happy for me, when I went to the office and told them I had found the gun, [they never got to submit anything to the state, I found the gun soon after the "visit".] However, I got a stark and very profound taste of what totalitarianism looks like right here in my living room... I will think twice next time....

It seemed like this was a newer thing that the feds sent this down and you can here the ATF agent say it. I don’t expect a visit but we will see. I’m glad I transferred the ar lowers about 1.5 weeks later when I picked up my pistols after the amendment was done by the office.

A friend of mine, his 2-year-old dialed 911 fooling with the phone, when they showed up he stepped off his porch and closed the door behind him, the cop actually tried to enter the house by pushing past him, saying we need to enter the house to see if everyone's alright, he said you will do no such thing, but I will call my kids and wife out here, so you can verify, which he did. Never let the police inside your house without a warrent.

What other rules similar to this exist (too lazy to look)? There was a good stretch where I was averaging at least one gun a month. It had me wondering if at some point something isn't triggered on the NICS end of things. Sure, the FFL has the specific gun information, but that doesn't matter. What matters is they know everytime you buy a gun and its obviously tracked. I mean 12-15 guns in one year hasn't triggered anything and I am sure some here have even bought even more than that lol.
