any thoughts on using balistol used it years ago then it seemed to fall out of favor and became a little hard to find. picked up a can at Gander in Kingston to try it's got a whole lot of organic environmentally safe writing that I don't remember on the original has it changed?

Yes, they did change the recipe, I don't know how but they said so themselves. I always keep a couple cans on hand and use it for a variety of jobs from treating leather to cleaning guns. seems the same to me, still takes my breath away.

I also bought a can in the newly reopened Gander where I live. I bought it on its reputation as an excellent all purpose CLP. But I also wonder if it is as good as is said. I don't mind the smell and since it os basically mineral oil if nothing else I will use it for blade maintenance since I occasionally use my pocket knives for food prep and fruit.

Where to buy Ballistol - Ballistol

Order combo kits. On Amazon too.

It's not an agressive cleaner so your firearm has to soak. I also use it on leather and wood. Even oil my Redwing boots. Not a copper solvent, not a leading remover. Removes carbon and fouling when I'm shooting reloads. Love it on my revolvers and 1911.

How is it for corrosion protection?

It’s weird ballistol actually leaves a very light non greasy coating even after wiped off so it works great. I’ve read that it can condition the metal after a few applications.

Flitz is a metal polish. A mild abrasive in otherwords.

I imagine most people have their cams in the garage. If not there then in the driveway. Or possibly in a pole barn or even the yard.

Depending on the gun and what I'm cleaning/protecting, I use Hoppes, Pro Shot, Break Free CLP, Rem Oil and Gun Scrubber.

You see, what I keep hearing about Ballistol is that its a one stop shot.

I've tried it, couldn't stand the smell. To be fair I clean my guns while watching Military Arms Channel, DemoRanch, John Wick movies, etc.. so I'm not in a well-ventilated area.

It might be snake oil but I've been using Strike Industries Anti-Venom XPLC since it came out.. sweet smelling, seems to clean okay and lubes very well. I've been waiting for someone to do an actual 'stress test' though.

For the longest time I've been on the hunt for the perfect all-purpose gun cleaning/lubing/protecting liquid. Used Hoppes for the longest time and I think it does a better job of breaking up fouling in the barrels but don't believe it does all that much for protecting or lubing. Always had to add a dab of gun oil (Hoppes or Outers brand) to the slides to keep them lubricated. Tried Ballistol and think it lubes and protects much better than Hoppes but not so sure on the cleaning bit. I've heard you should soak the parts to really get them clean but I don't have the patience for that. Funny, but just this evening I picked up some Break Free CLP from Gander Outdoors in Kingston to try. We'll see how that works.

Probable verdict is that there's no one best all purpose product and that consistency in cleaning/lubing is the best.
