I am suprised at the amount of people that say they use Hopes as a CLP. Its not a CLP folks. Its a solvent. It offers no corrosion protection nor does it lubricate. I use it for dissolving heavy powder deposits. Then I wipe everything dry and put some breakfree/slip 2000 ect. on.
It seems to mee that Balistol cuts carbon faster than a Brakefree CLP does. Its less viscous too.

I've wondered about this stuff for awhile after learning it is an ingredient in moosemilk, a patch lube for muzzleloaders. Anybody use it for that purpose?

Yes, I do. I use moose milk at the range because I don't have enough spit to last a session of shooting. But because moose milk contains water, peroxide and Lestoil I never use it for hunting, where the load may be in the barrel for hours or even days, it will rot. For that I use real Mink Oil, not the modern stuff with silica's in it.

I discovered Gunzilla a few years back on the recommendation of a friend who is a cop. Best CLP I have found yet and doesn’t stink up the house.

Is the moosemilk store bought or do you mix you own? Mink oil...stuff for boots?

The Moosemilk I mix up myself. The mink oil is pure and I get it at Trapper's MINK OIL TALLOW, patch grease, for match shooting & cold weather hunting, one 8 oz. tin - Track of the Wolf
Don't use the boot stuff, it is not pure, it has silicas and Petro products in it. Petro chemicals turn black powder residue into an asphalt like goo that is a bitch to remove.

Thanks for the link. I learned on bore butter, but I think I'll give the mink oil a try. I like a "one product does all" approach, stuff starts to accumulate...looking for a rod anyway, Track of the Wolf is pretty good.

The Mink oil is nice for hunting as it won't bet rock hard in the cold of winter like other lubes.

Just cleaned a few of my pistols using Breakfree CLP. Good stuff but very similar to Ballistol in my opinion. I'm thinking that I'm probably going to go back to Ballistol for most of my everyday cleaning/lubricating/protecting means while using the Hoppes for end of year bore cleaning.
I just picked-up two 6.oz cans of this yesterday at Beecroft's Shooters Supply in Schaghticoke! I have not been to this shop in a few years, He say's he keeps it in stock! If I like it may just have a friend with a Amazon Prime membership get it for me in the future?

Reference Ballistol, I bought a can several months ago and have used a bunch of what was in the can. I am not overly impressed by it and I truly don't understand all the special praise it gets. Yes, it lubricates and cleans - so too do many other oils. It smells disgusting to me, I much prefer the aroma of Break Free CLP but that is personal preference on something that may or may not matter much to others.
As for Ballistol, its label says it is environmentally safe and that it is "skin safe"; yet, also has a warning about its dangers. Those dangers include this stuff being harmful or deadly if you inhale its vapors, or ingest it. I also use Break Free - also harmful or fatal if swallowed but its label does not warn against breathing in its vapors. So, break Free may be a necessary lesser of two evils so to speak. Then again, there is Gunzilla. I have used that in the past and I am going back to it as soon as I receive my order of it (as in I placed an order today).
Gunzilla is touted as non-hazardous, see this. It contains zero petroleum distillates, zero ammonia, is non-flammable, is bio-based and cleans up with soap and water (then again so too do the other CLP type products I have used). I tested Gunzilla against Hoppes #9 (back in 2012 here) to see which cleaned guns better. I wound up using it for a couple or few years. Somewhere in there I found what I considered to be a medium flaw in the product - it started to turn the finish on my Remington 1911 R1 grips to a tacky/stickiness. While it seemingly does great at cleaning guns and a good job of lubricating them, watch out with it when used on different wood finishes. By the way, that was the only set of grips/stocks on which the Gunzilla evidently had a negative effect - no others were affected like the Grips on the Remington R1 and I cannot remember ifthey were the original grips or the nicer & fancier Remington OEM grips my son bought for me for it. So, I went back to the large jar of Hoppes I still had on hand and to Break Free CLP. Now though things are different again since I have a grandson running around now, grabbing things here and there, and it is time to go back to Gunzilla for me. Better to maybe mess up a stock finish than to accidentally poison a grandson. Still will keep the Hoppes and Break Free but stashed away for later use and will use the Gunzilla for now.

I can well imagine any of the gun specific cleaning/lube/fouling products having adverse affect on wood finishes. I found out that one person once complained that one of my refinish jobs didn't hold up routinely wiped down his stocks with #9.
Ballistol is supposed to not only not harm wood but condition it.

I have never experienced Hoppes #9 damaging any of the finishes on my wood stocks as best I can remember at this stage of the degradation of my little gray cells. I fact, I have often gotten Hoppes #9 on the finishes of my wood stocks, wiped it off and they were fine.
I suppose though that it, like almost any other solvent, might damage one type of finish or another. I tend to doubt any claims that any particular gun cleaning product is absolutely safe on all finishes.

I use Hoppes #9 to clean and Ballistol to lube and protect. Makes my guns feel smooth as hell.
