Bass Pro to buy Cabela's for $5.5 billion

I'm not really sure what this means for sportsmen and sportswomen. I tend to like the idea of retailers competing against each other. I've got no hate for either company though. I've shopped at Cabela's a bunch, but have only been to Bass Pro a few times.

Makes me sad. Like you said, competition is a good thing. It also worries me because Cabela's is one of the few brands of clothing that fits me well. That may not change, but someone had already mentioned that Cabela's was thinking of discontinuing their clothing line because it didn't do real well. Bass Pro will probably be looking to cut costs after the take-over.

For sure. I know hunting clothing can be difficult to find a good fit for women. I think the big box stores clothing lines aren't doing as well because of all the performance/specialty lines. Sitka, First Lite, Kuiu and others are really putting a dent into traditional brands.

This has been in the making for quite some time. Either way, both of those stores suck! Their prices are too high and their employees know very little.

I have little use for either place!

That's the LGS bread and butter market! More sales made with fishing supplies than with shooting. Thats what keeps them afloat.
Also Cabela's can order 200 of one type of lure. Your LGS may only order 5. Bulk price difference. You have to eat the price difference.

no big deal, you guy know that Field & Stream and Dick's Sporting are the same company, right.

Another weird fact: the guy that started Cabela's, also invented "the Bass boat" ~~~ he called it The Bass Tracker. He also owns ranger boats and Nitro boats....(I think it's Nitro)

I don't see much changing at all, there are plenty of other places to shop if they're prices get too high

Never shopped in either store, but both over the interwebz - Cabela's clothing is top notch, if a bit pricey - Bass Pro seemed sort of cheap.

Gander Mountain seems OK, but I'll take the local LGS anytime.

There's a great one about 30 minutes from The 'Hood.

I hope they stay the same in practice. I love Cabela's. I've been to 5-6 stores off the top of my head and have loved them all. I stop there whenever I am near one.

When I heard of all the tax breaks and preferential Bass Pro was demanding to get a store there I was gald when B-lo told em to take a hike.

I use to get excited to be able to go to Bass Pro. After a few trips I gave up. To high of prices.

I hate cabelas gun store. They are expensive and they are morons that know very little about guns. They were putting magazines I. The guns backwards. They also do not want to help you with anything at all.

I never shopped at Cabelas for guns. Ammo, cleaning supplies, bullets, random fishing stuff, clothing, camping gear; that's what we went for. Bought the Savage and the Rem 1911 at the LGS, the Beretta at Gander, the SP 101 from Bud's (never again). Paid too much for the 1911, but the LGS is more competitive with rifles. It's the bulk of what they sell.
