We bought our Chicago set maybe 25 or more years ago. The walnut handles have been restored at least three times. We've given away the steak, slicer/roast, and parings knives. All are still in use and we still have a chef, bread and two steaking knives. I'll bet we paid $20.00 for the bunch...and the set came with a block and steel.

I have a nice set of Wusthof knives made in Solingen Germany, they are awesome knives. I sharpen them on oil stones They hold thier edge for a while.

I’ve had a few traditional chefs knives mentioned above and all were / are excellent blades. For my money though you can’t go wrong with these. Made from high quality steels right here in the US and come with a lifetime warranty.Over time, If you want them honed back to factory specs just send them back and they will do it for free .

I love these knives. I have several Zwilling J.A.Henckels knives and these knives were a welcomed addition to my collection. When they arrived, they were so sharp that I could shave with them. They are made in Germany which is a critical detail. When you buy any Henckels knife, make absolutely sure that the knives are made in Germany. The company allowed their knives to be manufactured in Spain and Taiwan at some point in the past. Those knives are a terribly inferior product, trust me, I have them all. Do your due diligence, read the fine print and make sure that the knives that you buy are made in Germany like these ones are. Trust me, I have made that mistake myself. You will pay more for the German product but it is well worth the extra dollars that you're going to spend. They hold an edge better than any knife that I've ever owned and are easily re-sharpened.

Zwilling Pro vs Professional S vs Twin Four Star II — Compare and Contrast.
That's the set I have Pro S they are awesome. I have a set of "matching" steak knifes but don't recall if they're actually Henckels or not (they may be Wusthof). In any event, nothing particularly impressive about the steak knifes but the actual chefs knifes are great.

I know a few guys / chefs that own Cutco knives. They of course also own good German steel but prefer the Cutco brand knives for just about everything.

I have made that little critical detail mistake in the past as to their origin. I guess it’s kind of like firearms, can’t go wrong with German. And there are others that are fantastic too.

A cheap made in Japan set very similar to these has served me well for over 30 years.
I sharpen them with diamond paddles.

I bought a set of Henkles at premier liquor. I got em home and read the box , made in China WTF!!! promptly returned them to the store and bought the Wustoffs. No regrets. great knives keep an edge too.
