Don't all the coding jobs go to H1-B visa people from India?

Its more profitable and less physically demanding to be a politician anyhow. Lifetime medical and all.

Anybody who can actual code know this is bullshit.

Some people are better equipped for certain jobs than others. The sort of person who is well suited to mining may not be well suited to coding. Some people will never be good developers no matter the practice because their mind doesn't work in the way to do it properly.

Moreover, any career change you're forced into at 50 is going to be very difficult for most.

The coal industry is a dying industry. Very little can be done to save it. And I think much needs to be done to help coal miners and others in coal country retool and get jobs that they can earn a living on while still staying in their communities. But this smacks of ignorance and outright idiocy. Right up there with buy a double barreled shotgun and fire it into the air if somebody is trying to break into your house. Then again, those comments are the same person so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

So, this was definitely the case, pre-Trump. I could be mistaken if this is required by law or not, but I used to see paper postings when I worked in an office -- where they had to post their desire to fill a position with a foreign worker they wanted to bring in on H-1B.

I'd see it for common positions like database administrator roles -- of which there are plenty of workers in the USA -- for which they just wanted to bring in a cheaper worker to do the job. They would set the salary requirements extremely low so no one in the local area would take it, and then that was their justification for a foreign worker.

I'd see whole departments of people that were foireigners (Indians and Russians mainly) basically, or nearly so, with a few token non-foreign people, in the office at times. The foreign workers they'd hire they'd basically hold their Visa application hostage -- IE, it is part of the deal of working for the company that they sponsor the person. (If they left, the sponsorship would be revoked. I was told as much from some of the workers themselves.) It's a bargaining chip to keep that cheap labor in the office, that an American worker can't have held against them.

However, since Trump, I've seen a lot more openings in my industry, and a rise of about 10-15% over the last few years salary wise for the average in NYC. That's being conservative, even. It's because it's a longer, harder process to justify the H-1B visas now, so they have to actually look for American workers.

I dont entirely disagree but- what are those jobs and in what industries, and who will pay to start those businesses where they do not currently exist (and they do not exist in these communities for a myriad number of self-reinforcing problems)?

I don't have answers to that (I wish I did). What I do know is that the source of many of our problems nationally is that we're clustering people into smaller and smaller and denser and denser urban areas (particularly on the coast). What comes out of that type of living arrangement with thousands if not millions of people living literally right on top of one another is social dysfunction on a grand scale and economic and political policies that deny individuals their inherent natural rights.

I read a book several years ago called "Hallowing Out the Center" about the flight of youth from what most would call the heartland (basically non coastal states) and their reasons (mostly economic but also social too). It followed several young people from Iowa I believe (those who decided to stay and those who left...and for what it's worth some who stayed in the heartland were successful and some were failures; same for those who left for the big cities on the coasts).

The point I'm trying to make is that we can't cram all those people into denser and denser areas, nor should we have to. There should be some sort of opportunity for people who choose to live in heartland or even the hinterlands. Perhaps I'm Jeffersonian in my values and outlook but I believe that the future of our Republic depends on it.

People don't need to be coal miners and I don't support propping up industries for the sake of propping them up. But there needs to be the way to have a more even distribution of big cities to medium-sized towns to small villages in this country.
