But, you still haven't explained what gives Russia the *right* to tell Ukraine who they can and can't ally with.

I completely understand why it isn't in Russia's interest, but basically they are not the boss of Ukraine, so Ukraine doesn't have to care what Russia wants and doesn't want, anymore than Poland has to care.
