I have had bears residing near my seasonal cabin in Dutchess for over 20 yrs.See them mostly when I'm the only one there.I've been as close as 10 ft to them and have never did anything to scare them off.I've encountered them countless times,probably in the thousands,many times a female with cubs and have never felt threatened in any way.I always try to walk toward them to see how close I can get.Black bears are not the bogy man.Get a grip with needing a hand cannon cause you are in their turf.Now brown bears and grizzlies,thats another story.
Honestly, I'd prefer bear spray over a firearm. Way easier to use and has been shown to be as or more than effective than a firearm. If I had to choose a gun, I'd go with 357 or 44 mag.

And a car can kill you if it wants,so lets stay out of the roads.I dont try to approach a mother with cubs,but have found myself between the mother and cubs twice.Both times the cubs were within 50 ft or so,as I was watching them,the mother was about the same distance behind me.In both cases the mother took a circular route around me and walked off calmly with her cubs.The only time I've ever felt in danger was when I shot one in Canada and thought it was only wounded,tracked it and it ran off twice when it got dark,I had to wait about 3 hrs for the guide to come pick me up,a little nerve racking.

Get a 329pd and load it with the hottest buffalo bore you can find. If you miss you could knock yourself out and it might not Hurt as much if you get mauled.

I carry a 44, super redhawk alaskan with 2.5"barrel. But i would not feel under gunned with a 7 shot 357 with some buffalo bore ammo. I also carry a big knife while in the woods as well.

Stories like that make it so I will never have bear spray. The time wasted on that could get you killed.
Why not a Glock 20 with some stout Buffalo Bore or Double Tap loads? Or even a G29 if you want the least intrusive carry gun possible.

I see it as Very unlikely but possible. It’s what some “experts” have stated. And yes that would not bee a good day. Most black bears will run away with the noise of whatever noise and obviously from a shot.
If that doesn't persuade them and one can hurt them they are not like other animals that will charge
to the death. IF they are hurt, they will run away.
But there is also the possibility of a rogue (mentally or physically) sick animal.
So firepower combined with good placement beats anything else.
Of course the right ammunition no matter what caliber.

I've had a lot of close contact with black bears. I would never consider carrying bear repellent, with my luck I'd spray a bear that has seasonal allergies and the repellent wouldn't work because his sinuses were clogged. Anyways, I've had bears paw the tent I was sleeping in, and all I had was a measly Ruger MKII. Shortly thereafter I started carrying USP 45 on my back country trips. I've had bears come up to lean-tos that I was visiting during broad daylight. And as a guide I've called off hunts because it was too dangerous to continue, because the bear was concealed in the brush, possibly waiting for his next snack. I would prefer to use a large caliber handgun with as many rounds as possible available. Bears are incredibly fast, extremely silent, and very unpredictable. Make the first shot count, and don't count on scaring a bear away with noise.

A bullet is permanent, pepper spray is temporary. It anything attacks me of my family it will not live to attack any one else, PERIOD.
Whether it be a bear, cougar, wolf or a human.
We don't fuck with them so they will not fuck with us.
But shit happens all the time, so be prepared and have the right mind set, Kill or be killed.
I have an aquaintence out here in Washington State that goes bow hunting for elk over by Mr. Adams. He has always borrowed one of my 44 magnm Redhawks or my 41 magnum Redhawk to use as a side arm just in case of a close encounter with a large predator.
Well last fall he figured he has been bow hunting there for twenty-five years and never seen anything that would hurt him he didn't borrow a handgun.
One day while set up on a game trail he heard a strange noise and it was getting closer and closer. It turned out to be a young black bear cub.
The bear cub seen him and got real close to him sniffing and looking at him. The mom wasn't in sight until the bear cub mad a differet type of sound then mama came to see what the commotion was all about.
When she made eye contact she went from 0 to mean ass mother fucked in a hell of a hurry. He said he about shit his pants when she did the fake charge at him. She stopped less then ten feet away.
When this was going on the bear cub ran and climbed a tree, the mother bear stoop and searched for her baby and seen it climbing the tree and went to that tree, mean while he was backing up to put distance between them and him.
After that incident he said he will never be with out a large caliber handgun on him when he goes in to the wilderness.
Like I said out here we have the black bears, grizzled, wolves and cougar's.
About two or three weeks ago a older woman in northern Oregon was killed by a cougar, a week before that a young school teacher was jogging on Vancouver island Canada and was ran down by a pack of wolves, she was killed and partially eaten.
You can see thousands of predators, but there are some that will attack and kill. It only takes not to ruin your day. If you are not armed and aware of the situation you could be a statistic.

When I was wondering if I'd rather have a 10mm 1911 or that spiffy Coonan .357 1911 I looked into the relative merits of the cartridges.
Turns out .357 Magnum and the 10mm have a lot of overlap ballistically speaking. The hottest factory 10mm loads have the edge over the equivalent .357s, but only just. The extra case capacity of the .357 Mag means that thermonuclear loads can top the hottest 10mm handloads however.
In the end even when limited to 10 rounds there is still a tremendous amount of energy in your hand with the 10mm Glocks and they will be lighter and easier to carry than a large revolver.
