bought a used rifle from a dealer in NY

Went to the range today and was deemed that the upper is completely garbage and was unable to fire at all.
I purchased this rifle about a week ago from a dealer that had solid reviews- turns out I was sold garbage.

should I bring it to the attention of the dealer (I doubt they’ll do anything- no returns on used purchases right on their site) or just eat it and buy a completely new upper?
Thoughts?

the upper was not feeding. I’m not placing any blame on the dealer I just figured they’d at least go through the rifle before reselling it to make sure it functioned correctly. Although, I may be wrong in thinking that?

What was the cost?

I would go back to the dealer if the rifle is un usable. I mean its reasonable to expect if you purchase a gun from the rack (new or used rack) that it should be able to be fired.

Who made the lower what magazine are you using what ammo

which dealer?

not feeding can be due to several things.
was it short stroking?
was it over gassed and over riding the next round?
was it double feeding?


Did you buy a complete rifle?
did you clean and lube it?
What ammo?
what kind of mag is in the lower (assuring it is fixed)?
If not fixed Did you try multiple mags?
does it have an adjustable gas block?

please bear with me as I am new to the ar platform.

the upper is chiappa 22lr (after some research I’ve come to the conclusion these are junk). I bought it as a complete rifle with an aero precision lower. The ammo I was using was Winchester m22. The mag came with the rifle (photo attached).

I also noticed this appeared to be broke when I went to top load. Would this be associated with not being able to line up correctly when charging?

yeah you need a new upper receiver.

that’s what I had figured. I brought it back to the dealer and was basically told that I caused this to break (no piece to be found anywhere). I believe I overlooked this as I didn’t pull the rear pin when looking at the store. I was also told this wouldn’t affect the rifle in anyway. I guess I will cut my losses with this one and not return to where I bought this. I should have inspected it better when purchasing.

this is the part that is broken. If you don’t have the tools to take the upper apart you can take it to a gunsmith. Or maybe someone in your area can step up and help you out. There is also @BulletguyNick who may be able to help you out with assembly.

You might try calling Chiappa and seeing if they'll warranty it.

I had one of the Chiappa 1911 .22 pistols. It was junk. I won't buy anything else with their name on it.

on the bright side of all of this I now know their stuff is crap and won’t ever think about buying it again! Ha.

do us a favor and pull the bolt/ carrier and snap a few pictures of it, different sides, and make sure to a couple of the recoil spring and retention rod.

Any dealer that tries to tell you that the front takedown pin tab being broken off won't have any effect, is incredibly dishonest or incredibly incompetent.

That mag you pictured goes to a Smith and Wesson M&P 15-22. I am pretty sure they are proprietary and will not work with another brand of 22AR. The Black Dog mag is your best bet unless Chiappa has it's own mags. If so, use those. Also, yeah, your upper needs to be replaced.

It seems the reciever's receiver hole for the pin is broken.
did you tilt it open hard until it reached the maximum to open and stopped?
uppers are not designed to be used like that pivoting hinged like lets say a side by side shotgun you break open.
What do you mean with top load?

Chiappa are garbage.
The ony somewhat decent are the ones that have little complications in terms of the internal mechanisms.
Steel is average but it is ok.
A reliable 22LR upper is not a simple mechanism to balance and it can be a hit and miss and in case of the chiappa it is what it is.
contact the dealer and say WTF. If they do nothing try chiappa and if you get it fixed you want to sell this ASAP to your worse enemy...
But it might cost more in dollars and/or headaches.
If the broken receiver is out of warranty still can be replaced by a handy person, machinist and/or gunsmith but if you have
to pay anyone it is probably not worth it and it will continue to be a troublesome system.

Personally I would buy a proper upper or a ruger 10/22 all together and shoot trouble free until you are 90 years old
and then leave it to your grandchildren.
