Nope, nobody really "forces" them to stay, but being without a job makes advancements in life difficult...The Company closing up shop doesn't exactly do anyone any favors.

I agree, to a very small degree. Same can be said for all the nitwits going to college for education in nothing they`ll be able to support themselves with later, either, but we`re suppose to feel sorry for them? Nope, i don`t feel any more sorry for those in the LE and corrections employment either. You know full well going into it, what you`ll be up against employment wise. There`s other work out there. My "give-a-fukk" button broke a long time ago.

The County Jail is very short-staffed too. I toured it a couple of years ago. The CO giving the tour said at the time that essentially folks were applying for jobs there, getting training and then going to Orange County Jail (which isn't that far away) for way more money. I hate to have to pay more in taxes but we need to have full staffing at our critical facilities, and jails/prisons are definitely one of them.

Can confirm. I'm not familiar with this situation but my aunt works at Greenhaven in Dutchess County (not a CO...she works in inmate records I believe). There are stories like that from there too. Inmates can literally kill a CO with almost no consequences and if CO lays a hand on him it's lawsuits and dismissals.

True, no one forces them to stay. But here in Sullivan County a CO can make well over $100,000 a year with overtime. Not many high school graduates without nothing but that HS diploma will ever make that kind of money.
