Separate your ammo from your toys. Toys go in a locked box. It would be a plus to lock up the ammo as well in a separate box. No deviations to and from the range. Everything goes in the trunk. If you have an SUV, cover it up with towels, clothes, whatever. LEOs are too busy to camp out at a range.

He can transport hollow point ammo to his friend's range, provided he follows the law in transporting it correctly:
"As with other ammunition and firearms, a sportsman would have to comply with the provisions of N.J.S.A 2C:39-6f and g when transporting hollow nose ammunition to a target range. The ammunition should be stored in a closed and fastened container or locked in the trunk of the motor vehicle in which it is being transported. The course of travel should be as direct as possible when going to and leaving from the target range with "only such deviations as are reasonably necessary under the circumstances." N.J.S.A 2C:39-6g."

I have been told it is legal for a NJ non-resident to transport (locked case separated from ammo) a pistol to a NJ range as well but have never been able to find the actual law that definitively states that is the case. I did ask a NJ LEO directly one time and he looked at me as if I had two heads on my shoulder. I think the law is pretty clear that "a person" yada yada yada can legally transport a pistol directly to and from a range in NJ for purposes of target shooting. The issue I have is it seems unclear if "a person" is any person or just a NJ resident. I've opted out of bringing any firearms to NJ. If you decide to do it, I'd go straight to the range and straight back, no stopping at your friend's house, lunch, etc but that's just me. With that said I think it is highly unlikely you'll have any problems. Good luck.

good timing, as I'm checking out the 6 Star Shooting Range in NJ | Gun For Hire range on Saturday. Taking a few pistols and some friends. Plan on renting some stuff too.

My mother has a house on the shore too. Love it in the summer.

And TSUSA won't ship to city or from city billing addresses. So now I have my cousin order for me. Sucks.

because my kids have been able to shoot handguns since age 12 there. and for about $10 each you can rent different handguns and try them out before you purchase them. We make it a monthly trip from Long Island.

Overall, NJ's gun laws are much less restrictive. Everyone thinks that because NJ law enforcement is more proactive against guns that the laws are worse, but they really aren't other than one fact: their carry permit situation is like NYC, except statewide.

no one is inspecting cars as you pull in the lot...or into NJ for that matter...don't worry. Keep everything locked up and if you get pulled over for doing something stupid it won't be a big deal, just mention what you have in the back so they' are no surprises.

same thing at the Smith & Wesson headquarters & factory up until a few years ago. They had a few indoor ranges where you could come in and rent guns for the day. No permit required. Out of state ID no problem. I'm up that way a dozen times a year, so I use to love stopping in there. It was all good until some convicted felons went in, showed their id's, and were given guns to shoot. It shined a light on the fact that anyone could come in there and shoot. While I miss shooting there, someone needs to be making sure that not just anyone is allowed to walk in off the streets and shoot.

Guns for Hire is a great clean well ventilated place but always crowded. They really keep you to your hour time limit. There are a few others a bit further south where for the same money I have kept a lane for 3 hours.

And in reference to my above post, call first if you are bringing kids. Different ranges have their own rules. But I also never had to prove my kids ages [wink, wink]

Gun for hire is also known as Woodland Park Range. That municipality use to be West Paterson. It is conveniently off I-80. Unlike what someone else said, don't mention anything unless specifically asked about that item type in your trunk if pulled over. If behaving lawful in your driving, you have a better chance of a tree falling on you than being pulled over.

not sure about NJ but the law in NY is if you get pulled over while you have your firearm in the vehicle, you are to inform the officer immediately. Is this not true?

i use an app called CCW. It shows you enter your permits and it shows you what states you can carry in, and a high level overview of the laws. Its handy, but to be safe i wouldn't take it as the final word.

I remember going for my permit about 7 years ago and reading in the manual (westchester county) that if I were to be pulled over on my way with my gun in my trunk I was to inform the officer immediately. I always remembered that for some reason.

No Duty to Inform in NY... And if you have guns, it would be wise to read "ALL" the applicable laws rather than take hearsay as valid. Don't know where you got the required to inform from, but I would eliminate it as a reliable source for anything then. Common sources are trainers, gunshops, etc, and at times LE or others. Is amazing how many variations of actual law you'll encounter... More than 50% is all BS.

That said, the difference is "If Asked"... Then what? Lol... I would suggest if you're legal, then comply with the request and answer. If for any reason you may think you are possibly not legal for any reason, you're best to keep your mouth shut, change the subject, etc. Lol...

Agree there is no duty to inform, however, PL 400 does require that when you have a pistol in your possession you must also have on your person a license to carry such pistol. In addition, you must present the license to any peace or police officer UPON DEMAND. So, IF ASKED you must show your license if you have a pistol in your possession.
