Building AR 10?

Thinking about building an AR10, was hoping being talked out of it.

I think Im set, gun wise, with mostly everything except a larger caliber semi auto. I have older 30-30 lever and a mosin. But maybe a modern semi auto 308 is in order.

Would be going with PSA, if I do.

Personally,,,if you are thinking about building a AR10,,sign up for emails at Aero Precision. They make good parts and they are all compatible with each other if you look at what your buying as far as enhanced parts or other proprietary parts they have. Basically all lowers will match to all uppers but only certain uppers will match to certain handguards.

Ive been wanting to build one with a BSF carbon barrel which is what I put on my RPR 6mm creedmoor. I want to build the lightest gun I can for hunting. My RPR is much lighter with the 20" carbon barrel than it was with the 24" OEM steel barrel but walking through the snow with tons of clothes on and a slightly heavy gun gives me the ambition to lighten the load a tad more.

Now would be a good time to sign up being that Black Friday is coming.

I wouldnt go with PSA,,,Ive seen a bunch people buy what is suppose to be matching parts off their website and find out they dont quite match up perfectly or match at all.

My problem with building and buying isnt money,,,its the fact Im having a hard time justifying buying a new caliber that I really dont need. I personally was going to build a 6.5 creedmoor. Only reason I would ever purchase a 308 is because of cost of ammo even know I reload...... 6.5 creedmoor is a flatter shooting caliber and has less recoil than a 308. Distance is better.

I am in the process myself and most vendors are not very explicit in identifying that difference. The new term i see now is ".308", I am assuming that is DPMS G2 but I am not sure. I hope I am zeroed in by the post holiday building season.

As an enthusiast you should definitely get one or build one. No reason not to other than financial. Heavier round than .223/5.56 will stop the zombies in one shot.

i did know about the difference in parts that the AR15 doesn't have to deal with. As robin said, they arent always clear. I did sign up for aero precision, so Ill keep an eye on them. Ive built lowers but not sure I want to build the upper, although I have the magpul wrench.

we will see what I find.

i want a semi auto (ar10) style gun for texas pig hunting.
i think i may be going to do some of that in the next year or two.

however, 6.5 seems to be what i am thinking. in case i want to do some longer range stuff

I have an SR25. Made by Knight's Armory out of FL. Eugene Stoner went there and developed the gun he originally wanted there. Almost, the first prototype was a 30-06. Anyway mine is a 24" heavy match, free floating barrel. Sent with a sub .5'' MOA test target @100yrds. Funny part is I paid $3000G for it new in a hard case. Today it can't be touched for less then 5G new. It's residing down in Texes in my uncles safe. I know I post a lot about how we are not legally abide to obey an unconstitutional law. Problem is I'm not into losing my investment should the occasion arise that I have to fight in court to protect those rights. I have currently been thinking about getting a enhanced trigger guard and spur grip so it can come home for my long range plinking. So @Bananabandit have you considered optics yet? I need some for mine for sure. Thinking IOR Valada Recon model or a Shmidt & Bender. Or a Nightforce.

Honestly i’m starting not to like mine. It’s too bulky and heavy for hunting which was the intended purpose. I want to sell my AR-10 and build an AR-15 specifically for hunting. I already have a KS-47 from Palmetto state. Might just build a next upper for that one.

Anybody know if the Thorgson (spelling?) stock fits? I've been thinking about bringing the SR back home because it has a standard muzzle with no threads.

You say to heavy for hunting. You have any idea what is making it heavy? Barrel, barrel length, BCG or all the above or something different. To me, my guns seem heavier in the winter with a couple of layers of clothes on, walking through snow etc.

I ask because Im leaning back and forth on whether I should build a AR10.
Of course money is starting to be a factor because now I'm looking into a Night Vision Scope and a Thermal or a Night Vision monocular

My RPR with 20" carbon barrel seemed fine for woodchuck hunting but seems heavy carrying it out to my tree stand through snow.
