Building AR 10?

Honestly i’m starting not to like mine. It’s too bulky and heavy for hunting which was the intended purpose. I want to sell my AR-10 and build an AR-15 specifically for hunting. I already have a KS-47 from Palmetto state. Might just build a next upper for that one.

If you are looking at a AR15 and dont have this caliber,,,look at building or buying a 6.8spc. Its normally my deer gun and is the lightest AR I have. Its built with a 18" wilson combat lite barrel. Only reason why I'm not using it is because 3 days before deer season I stuck the scope back on it and went to sight it in. Reticle wouldnt move no matter how many turns of the turrets I gave it. Its a Redfield 2x7

Everything is heavier on an AR-10. I went with Palmetto State. It has the A2 stock which definitely adds even more weight above the extra from the beefier barrel, bcg and even the upper and lower themselves.

You say to heavy for hunting. You have any idea what is making it heavy? Barrel, barrel length, BCG or all the above or something different. To me, my guns seem heavier in the winter with a couple of layers of clothes on, walking through snow etc.

I ask because Im leaning back and forth on whether I should build a AR10.
Of course money is starting to be a factor because now I'm looking into a Night Vision Scope and a Thermal or a Night Vision monocular

My RPR with 20" carbon barrel seemed fine for woodchuck hunting but seems heavy carrying it out to my tree stand through snow.

I ditched my heavy rifles for predator hunting in winter time, switched to a savage model 10 223 with a sporter barrel. Just easier to carry around. My lr308 was pretty heavy, I never considered hunting with it.

Fulton Armory is another source I believe they are DPMS pattern but call them FAR308 they used to sell parts (barrels, bcg etc not sure if they still do or not). Fulton Armory

Thank you for clarifying. I always thought that stock was space age looking. Will be one of my next purchases ..... up, up, and away!

Thordsen Gen lll stocks are better looking than the originals IMO.

Mine is very, and I mean very front heavy rifle with the HM barrel @24"

It's a shoot supported rifle. Bi pod, of a wall, rucksack, or whatever the case.

I surely do not need a 24" barrel but 16" may be a bit on the short end for this caliber?

An 18-20" barrel will do fine in most environments. The longer heavy barrels are what's needed for the longer range hits. What is your purpose or I should say role for the gun?
I'm interested to see what you build.

Just a semi auto 308.

Not for hunting or shooting chipmunks nuts at 1k+ yards. Wont be a benchrest gun.

If you go with an 18 you'll save some weight on an already "heavy'' gun. The 18 looses hardly any velocity to a 20'' variant.
If I was to add another AR 10 platform I'd build an 18'' DMR with a medium weight match barrel.

It is my least favorite rifle, I would not get another.
A garand or bolt gun in.308 is a better choice imo.
m14 , FAL are other semi .308 offerings.

Get the .50 bmg instead.

I've yet to get a bolt gun. I keep saying "this is my last gun.'' Who am I kidding?
When I do get a bolt gun I'm thinking along the lines of aftermarket chassis, flash suppressor, pistol grip......FUAC

One of my favorites is an M1A in a blackfeather chassis. If you sell off your 10 I'd suggest looking into this one. Not cheap but very nice. You're lucky with the LEO status to legally obtain this. my M1A scout is in beautiful wood stock with a homo compliant muzzle.

My barrel being compliant hasn't a thing to do with accuracy. I believe he may have other issues. My compliant part is made by LRB arms out of Long Island. Top notch company for M14/M1A's. It's nothing more then a fake flash suppressor, so the front sight can be reinstalled. The holes for the flash are "filled" in when manufactured by LRB. the castle nut set screw is then TIG welded in place by a competent smith. Fulton Armory offers a non threaded barrel with a gas block made to mount the sight. This also changes the sight radius resulting in the need for a taller sight.
