correctI assume he just used standard threaded flanges like these.
I would have added ones on the bottom as well if it wasn't going to be used on a hard surface.

I'd run a router around the top surface of the cut out. It'll be a lot more comfortable.
problem is it is plywood and that will create more areas for splinters.

You could also glue and screw a piece of 1/4 round along the edge if the sharp corner becomes an issue.

So I modified my computer chair to become a shooting stool.
Three inch aluminum square tubing replaced the wheels and a Walmart stool seat top replaced the seat with back.
The stool top had 0.9" X 1" holes drilled into it for the legs to go in so I used the pre drilled holes to mount the seat frame. I used some flat headed carriage bolts that had heads a little bigger than one inch in diameter, chucked them in my drill press and used a file to cut the heads down to 0.9", seated them in the pre drilled holes and filled them with epoxy. The only thing I need to do now is cut the adjustment lever off closer to the base so I don't accidently hit it with my leg. Now I have a swivel stool to use at the range which can be adjusted for any bench I use.
