BUIS Necessary?

Don't just say yes because you have them. Explain why BUIS are necessary?

Has your optic ever broken down? Those that have tritium or 5 year batteries, has your reticle ever died out? I've had the same battery now constantly on going on 3 years and it's a 5 year battery. I have plenty of those batteries around.

If combat Marines who actually punish there stuff everyday don't even get them, why would we need them? Just because?

About the only thing I can think of is an EMP taking them out but I have that covered. A spare sight and mount is waiting for me in an EMP bag.

For me it has more been a matter of convenience. I have had BUIS on a couple of rifles because I mounted them before I had enough money for a decent optic. So then you just wind up having them.

I like the 45 degree off set BUIS for CQB situations. Good peripheral vision versus looking down a tube. Optics pick up dust, grit and film, need seconds to clean, never had open sights fail that way.

Two is one, one is none.

I have 5 AR’s. Of them, 2 have backup sights.

1. My M4 clone only has the carry handle sight and front sight post as I did not have a scope in the Army.

2. My “battle rifle” does have them.

3. My 9mm pistol does have them.

4. My AR-10 only has a 4-12 hunting scope on it.

5. My KS-47 only has a red dot.

I really don’t see the need and probably won’t put them on any future builds.

IMO, it depends on the purpose.

On a varmint setup with a 24 inch tube? No
On a carbine for home defense? Yes

Anecdotal, but I've seen optics and scopes take a beating and hold zero. But...I've also seen the opposite.

I don't think they are strictly necessary but there are several models that are so light and so low profile that why not have them anyway?
Sometimes I just like to shoot irons.

From a practical standpoint it's not too difficult to imagine that even a supremely durable optic on an equally durable mount becomes damaged or knocked out of zero from being jammed hard into a door or window frame, or a vehicle doorframe, or anything else in a vehicle, or you drop the gun into a muddy mess schmootzing up the lenses.
I think BUIS become even more relevant if you are using an optic that doesn't offer a 1x magnification setting.
Incidentally all the above are why I prefer, strongly, QD mounts.

These are the BUIS are the ones I want:

There are so thin and so light that it's like they aren't even there until I need them.
Bobro makes a very high quality product also.

I had them on my 3 gun rifle as I though i would use them for closer targets.

I have since removed them as I figured out where on my optic to shoot at what range.

I do like the idea of them out in the field if your optic has is a reticle powered by battery but for my set up they are just extra weight.

My post stemmed from a problem I'm facing. I've always ran BUIS because I was always told to do so and I figured "why not?" but I've never ever had to use the them.

My Ruger PCC has been modified. I lost zero by mounting my red dot on the receiver rail. After taking it apart for cleaning (the receiver comes off the stock) I lost zero (less than centimeter or so at 25 yards) after putting the receiver back on the stock. So I found an alternative. It requires removing the rear iron sight that's on the barrel and instead putting a rail there that someone created to solve this problem with an optic so that no matter how many times I take the rifle apart for cleaning, it doesn't matter as the red dot itself is now on the barrel and it never moves.



Being that that original front iron sight is too low, I removed it and there isn't an aftermarket one available that's barrel mounted.






So basically my choices are to run them both on the receiver rail and deal with minor battlesight zero issues, run them on the handguard gangsta style which also crowds the handguard, or don't run them at all.

I'm kind of leaning to not running them at all since no one's quality optic has ever broken.

Why not 45° offsets on the pic rail. Short sight radius but they are just back up irons

In not a fan of those unless they fold down. Those are usually pretty bulky. I think if I do run both on the top rail, they'll probably just be regular fold downs.

HD. It just stays in the same place all the time. Doesn't move except for an occasional 50 or so shots trip to the range to check zero.

In that case as long as it's a quality optic, and you know the battery life and change it well before they die, irons isnt needed

16" barrel gun like that if it does dies point shooting will work. Hell just use the optic as a big ass ghost ring if the dot dies or practice using the very top as a reference point

I'm leaning towards that.

Yes they are necessary because some of my rifles don't have optics. So they are PIS and not BUIS. If you don't like the 45 degree sights because they don't fold then just put normal folding sights on the side. It's M-Lok for a reason.

After seeing the abuse that several people put the Halosun optics through and they survived, even being dragged through a creek, behind a car, busted glass, etc. They still worked and held zero. The original battery that came with mine died but I'm thinking it was just a fluke battery. The replacement I put in it has been fine. I keep it in the instant on mode all the time and it always works.

I've had both an aimpoint micro and currently have a primary arms which is the same company as holosun and so far as far as durability and battery life, they are the same.

With the amount of positive reviews of the different Holosun sights I could see no reason to spend the extra $500 on the more "tacticool" brands. I'll never put mine through what the reviewers do but have had it out in the snow and rain while hunting and never an issue. I've seen enough from others that I have no issues trusting it.
