I'm going to have to do this eventually as well and thread my barrel once I get my Fab Defense stock. I'll start my own SKS mod thread once I get all the parts
Yours is definitely on the right track so far. I'm glad that I'm not the only person who is modifying their SKS's. So many people I know are like "why are you doing that, it's a classic". It's funny how they put it in the same category as say an M1, 1903 or a K98.

This thread is making me regret not buying an sks. IMO They're such cool under appreciated guns. And us peasants in FUAC land can own them

What do you know? They've actually been moving for the last month. Appears my batch is being built now, and I just might make it in time for Christmas!
Figures, this is a new caliber for me, and I can't find any ammo. Might have to trade up some 9mm, or 5.56 if anybody has some spare 7.62.
It's been a long wait, but I knew that when I ordered. I figured about a year, so at seven months it was kind of a pleasant surprise. Still not acceptable from a company that's been in business for years, but anyway, should be a matter of days now.
Stock should be here Thursday, so hopefully I can finish this build this weekend.

Apparently sightmark has upped their game a little bit, so I ordered one of their new version reflex sights for less than half the money I would have spent. This is only a plinker anyways, so I don't really need an always on optic.

Ok, after a little research, I have found the the two biggest issues with sks rifles.
1. slam fires from a stuck firing pin. This is well known, and I did know about this. I have taken my bolt apart and cleaned the channel thoroughly. I don't feel the need to go with a spring loaded pin, as it's easy enough ( and good practice ) to keep your parts clean.
2. Negative sear engagement, which can cause an accidental discharge by bumping, or dropping with a chambered round. This I didn't know about, and found while researching how to clean up an sks trigger. It seems a great deal of sks have this negative sear engagement and mine does also.
The good news is that this can be fixed, while greatly improving the stock shitty trigger that accompanies most sks. I just have to decide if I'm going to do this on my own, or avoid the aggravation and send it out.
I'm a tinkerer, and will more than likely do it myself. I'll probably wait a bit to do this though, and post a different thread on it when the time comes.

Ordered myself 2 Sears, and a pack of Wolff springs. Looks like I decided to do it myself.
With a little luck, maybe one of the new Sears will have the correct geometry, and I won't have to do any filing.
In any case, the trigger should be much improved unless I fuck it up.

After an 8 month wait it appears FedEx has messed up my delivery. Supposed to be delivered yesterday, and it's still in Illinois with a new pending delivery date. 
I received the sightmark ultrashot r-spec reflex sight today. I'm impressed. It appears to be built like a tank, has nice clear glass. It's a little bigger and heavier than my favorite sight- the holosun 510c. Only flaw I find with it so far is obviously it doesn't have the same battery life, and depending on head position, I can see some emitter glare at bottom of glass. But overall, I'm very happy with it for a $100 optic.

I removed the front sight, cut off 2". If you don't want to thread the barrel, this is an exact fit once the sight is removed.Nice job!

And now to test the magazine I modded to accept stripper clips. Spoiler- success!-it was extremely fast and easy. In this video, it only took half the rounds because as of now it's still only a 5 round limited mag. I'll change it to 10 later.

All fitted and assembled. I knew I wouldn't be lucky enough for a direct fit. Had to do a bit of filing and grinding, and swap some shims around, but all in all it wasn't too bad. Took me a few hours taking my time, and everything fits nice and tight. I needed to modify the mag some more. Since it's a fixed mag, I wanted to be able to remove the baseplate to empty rounds, and clear jams. The base on this mag slides forward, and the pistol grip gets in the way. A little filing on the base rails allowed me to remove it in the opposite direction. I still need to make a bracket and install a rail for the forgrip, and hook up and adjust the trigger linkage. I'm too tired to finish it now.
Overall, I'm extremely impressed with it so far. Very compact, and balanced so well I can easily shoot it one handed. The only con so far is the top rail is not milspec. The quick detach mount on my reflex sight won't tighten up. I'll have to throw some shims under the sight to get it to work.

Badass!!
Finished some little things. I didn't want to pay an extra $70 for their tri-rail mount, so I finished a simple bracket to mount the vfg. Got my optic snugged up on the out of spec rail by placing a couple washers under the optic. Trimmed the block in the 5 round mag to make it a 10 rounder, I have a couple spare 5 rounders I'll keep as is- in case I ever get my lazy ass out hunting again.
Received my spare sear, and wolf springs for the trigger job I'm going to attempt myself. All that will be left after that is hooking up and tuning the trigger linkage. ( And start looking for some 7.62 ammo )

After three weeks in the mail for a 4 hour ride, my wolff hammer and sear springs came. Installed those, and redid the geometry on my sear with some tedious filing.
It may look like I removed alot of material, but the point of contact with hammer is right here in the back corner which was barely touched.
Now I have just a touch of positive sear engagement as opposed to negative engagement, making for a much safer sks.
Next up is polishing the contact points, and hooking up the trigger linkage. Then time to move on to the next build which is already in progress.
