Wellness checks do in fact happen, they happen far more than many people realize.
I am all for the Police doing these kinds of checks, Wellness checks, when used in a proper manner are good for society. Many lives have been saved due to these. When I was deployed, I called the local Police to do a Wellness/Welfare check on my family. I tried calling home for more than 14 hours and got a busy signal each time I called the house. The Police arrived, introduced themselves and explained why they were there. They asked to look around the inside of the house to ensure all was good to go. About an hour and a half later, I got a call oversees from one of the officers, told me all was good and that one of the phones was off the hook. Again, these kinds of checks are a good thing.
In this situation, according to articles that I have read, this guy was acting all kinds of weird and making some odd statements which led the Police to look into the situation deeper. I am not blaming the guy, per say, I will however make a comment such as:
Know who your audience is. In this case, the Police were there, not due to a call from a family member, but from an outside participant. Words have meaning. Be careful of what you say to the Police. If you are aware of unlawful items, be even more careful of what you say and how you act around the Police. The Police are not the friends of the people.
I tell people all of the time, only commit one crime at a time and never be open to officers of the law. Only answer the questions posed in simple words and phrases. Do not tell a story, do not lie. Keep words very simple.

Some wellness checks can be funny though. One time late in my dad's life, when he was living alone, he called 911 late at night to report that there were people directly outside his bedroom window having sex, and that he could hear them moaning. I rushed over there, as did the cops too. Turned out there was loud moaning going on right outside his window, - his National Fuel Gas meter was about to fail, and with every revolution of the meter, it actually let out a loud moaning and squealing sound! I got them to come out and fix it. But damn, - it really did sound like it!
My kids called one in on me when I was spending the first weekend at my new girlfriends house. I had not told my kids about my new relationship, and to be honest, I had ignored their calls and texts to me that weekend as I was a bit occupied. They called the cops and told them that they thought I must have been kidnapped. The cops did show up that Sunday morning, - in three cars as I recall. Scared the shit out of my girlfriend and almost ended things right then. But she laughs about it now. Says who the hell would want to kidnap me to begin with, and besides, I am a big guy who is always carrying... The cops thought it was pretty damn funny though!

Speaking of the Firing Pin, how have they been doing since the fire? Are they rebuilding yet? Haven't seen much about them lately after their tragic range fire.
If you buy the ammo from an out of state vendor and it is paid for through Gun Broker.............LIKE RIGHT NOW, with tax paid..................and sent to the NYS FFL.........the FFL did not sell the ammo, just received the ammo, like now.....he did not sell the ammo, even after Sept 13th..........................does he just hand the ammo over as normal, or does he have to do a NYS NICS check on the ammo delivery, after Sept 13th?
