Technically she was convicted of involuntary manslaughter but she still murdered someone. They were smoking weed together when she apparently had a break with reality and killed her boyfriend. Everyone involved expected a heavier sentence but the judge went rogue. This is crazy.

Tragic. I think that they’ll find out eventually that this chick is in a constant state of a “ break from reality “ . Hopefully it will result in the death of just herself rather than another innocent victim.

There should be no discretion in the justice system.

And any system that requires it is badly broken.

To be justice it *must* be deterministic. Once the jury agrees on what the relevant facts are, the the outcome should identical for any other case with the same facts, no matter who the judge or lawyers involved are.

Anything else is not justice.

There’s always a case of extremes where things can be taken into account but I don’t think sitting around smoking so much weed that your have a break from reality is that case. In fact the government legalized it so if anyone is at fault the government is and they should be able to be sued for millions or billions then.

The .gov doesn’t require or force anyone to suck the devil’s dick, so suing for smoking his hog isn’t likely to gain any momentum. If you willfully want a mouthful of stupidsmoke drawn into your lungs, that’s your business. Yours. Remember the “less government intrusion” mindset? It applies here 100%, except for the murder. I agree but I think the judge took this into account when making the decision. If it was an illegal act that caused this would the charges have been murder or something else? I know if people die in the process of a criminal act some charges can be enhanced so it’s likely the gov making weed legal had an impact all around.

If you choose to get drunk, then you willingly put yourself in that position, so you are responsible for whatever happens.

I agree with the substance abuse stuff I just think it’s a bad idea for the government to allow more legalization of drugs so I think they should be held liable for it.
The condition I was thinking of for leniency would be something like a 15 year old starving kid steals food and someone gets hurt.

Do potheads just take little tokes because they like the flavor? For that matter, did weed ever factor into a dietary need the way that beer did, being that it sanitized a poor water source thereby making a local well potable all throughout history? Alcohol can kill, sure. So can weed toxicity. But there just aren’t many weed smokers that take a small sip because it pairs well with dinner, or the flavor is great. It’s pretty common to consume alcohol in amounts that will not cause inebriation, and it’s also possible to smoke in that same fashion. You can say the same about “a little bit of coke” or “just a pinch of meth” or a “quick drop of heroin” but let’s be honest about it: Not many people are using drugs for the flavor/taste.

I don't disagree with what you say. But calling all marijuana smokers potheads is like calling all drinkers alcoholics. You know, the broad brush thing.

I just don't think weed is that big of a deal the same as I don't think beer is that big of a deal.

If you're an angry drunk, and you get drunk and kill someone, that's murder. You willingly got drunk. You don't get a pass just because your mistake was the drink instead of the stabbing.

Agree completely that weed isn’t a big deal, I don’t care if people smoke it, eat it or other, AS LONG AS their use doesn’t negatively affect my life. Live, and let smoke, as it were. A lot of people abuse alcohol, and a whole lot of people smoke weed. Good times, good times.

Some research indicates that weed is causing this. Are they accurate? Who knows.

I can completely believe that there are people who, for whatever reason, cannot tolerate pot.
Just like some cannot handle liquor.
Just like some can't handle caffeine.

But you don't treat them differently because they have genetic faults that render them incapable of handling a low-grade drug.
