Can a friend fire my handgun legally with no permit?

I don't want to get anybody in trouble but I know of at least one local gun store that will let people without permits handle handguns. They have no problem with it at all. Suffice to say it's not field & stream. Be surprised if anybody can dredge up a case of such a scenario resulting in a charge.

As for firing it, find some public land, bring your handgun and a rifle, and then he can shoot your rifle. Just make sure that when nobody is around you definitely, really really, don't let him maybe just once shoot your handgun. Because that would be super bad.

I know couple of gun salesmen that probably should be in jail? How many of us went to a gun store and were allowed to handle a hand gun without having our permit. Do yourself a favor, go out on private property and shoot up the woods. that should avoid a lot of 'legal' bullshit

I really just don't see how allowing someone to handle and shoot my pistol While I am standing tight there counts as that other person possessing my pistol. Furthermore I have always thought it utterly ridiculous that a shop will not allow anyone without a permit to handle a pistol. Picking up and examining a pistol at an shop under staff supervision is most certainly not possession.
I think New Yorker's sheepish paranoia is a big a drag on your liberty as democrat legislation is.

That basically already happened to me once. Except he wasn't my buddy and I wasn't holding it nut was sitting next to it in his car. It was in the door pocket. Spent a night in the county jail but was released after the driver copped to it.

The one and only time ive been pulled over by the cops I got a possession of marijuana charge.
I did not smoke cigarettes or weed but my friend that was with me had 2 roaches in his cigarette pack, which he conveniently threw on my dashboard.
He said it wasnt his and was able to walk away. I acctually was taken to jail.....for 2 roaches!
$50 fine......I was 18 years old.

it's the same official application that is available for download from the ny.gov state website.

The FFL/org is just guiding us through the process to ensure it is filled out properly and you have met the prerequisites (ie pistol purchase, safety course, etc) which they also provide.. kind of a one-stop shop for all.. no issues using them.. just wasn't sure what the actual permit would say when I got it.. guess we'll just have to wait and see...

There is a LGS that is advertising. "If you're going to get a permit, we have over 160 firearms you can try out so you can find the gun that fits you before you buy"

So they must have a couple of NRA Trainers on staff, otherwise I would think they would get in trouble, but what do I know?

You have to buy one without touching it. Yes, that's the way the law is written.

In Montgomery you need to have at least a down payment on a handgun before you can get your permit.

Here in Onondaga County I got my license first then went shopping. Sorta goes with the notion that a person needs a PP to touch a handgun.

it is strange that we are forced to choose, and purchase a firearm "before" we submit the application.. first, what if we aren't ready to decide on what to purchase? second, and assuming it will take months before you are approved, what if there's a newer model of the firearm or something nicer came along? third, what if you don't get approved? now you have to deal with getting your money returned from an FFL that may or may not be in business when that happens. Some also charge a "restocking/cancellation fee" the whole process sucks.. BTW, i was able to examine both firearms ordered when they arrived at the FFL.. Glock 19 gen 5 and CZP10 FDE.. both sweet pistols....

oh and BTW, have any of you guys been to Sheepdog Warrior range up north? owners are cool and you can shoot pretty much anything with anyone. I just did a whole tactical exercise w/the AR with various targets (wrecked automobiles, paper targets, metal target, etc) strategically placed around the area. It was a quiet day at the range so we had the whole place to ourselves. Make a trip out there.. it is worth the ride..

In Wayne County, I had to buy a pistol that I could not touch in order to apply for a permit. Luckily the permit came in when it did because the shop that was holding my gun went out of business not long after. Yes, it did suck laying out the cash for property that I could not touch and could not even be certain I'd ever be approved for.

I still want to hear a legally inclined member clarify what constitutes possession. I know that simply holding an object is not legally considered possession. Therefore if NYS defines possession of a firearm differently than for other things or differently than standard legal precedent a lawsuit should be filed. We should be filling lawsiurs around the clock, appeals around the clock attacking unjust and illegal firearms legislation from every possible angle. And all of us need to start putting up the money to finance these efforts. Send money to each and every fight in each and every state, county city and town.

If memory serves and if I'm wrong I apologize - @Eddie Gunks had obtained an opinion from his local DA's office as to the "handling on a shop's premises" thing (answer was it's ok to do so). I would imagine your mileage would vary jurisdiction to jurisdiction, since this state appears to have no interest in equal protection statewide (see also: Sullivan Act, application thereof across different locations in this shitbag state).

I've been to different counties in NYS with other adults along with me that were given the okay to handle the handguns in the store even though they did not have a permit. They were given permission by the county police or something I can't remember exactly.

One of the dumbest laws in NYS. Even in NJ they let you rent and fire handguns at a range if you don’t have a permit. Most states require you to pass a target shooting test before receiving a permit. Only in NY. On top of that you cannot take possession of a handgun you purchase until your local judge or sheriff approves an amendment.
