You don't even have to be holding it to be in possession. Example: You have a gun in your center counsel. You run into a store and leave a passenger in your car. That passenger is now in possession of that firearm.

If you want to be technical. IIRC (ianal) even if your friend had a New York license it is still illegal for them to shoot your handgun unless it was also registered on his license.

But for your specific situation, it would be illegal for him to shoot or even hold your handgun
