Yes, the 5 round limit is for auto loading guns. You can have a 10 round mag in a bolt gun when hunting deer in NY.

What they call auto? A pump with a 9 round tube was not legal in NYS I was told years back. Had a Moss with that tube on it, was told not legal for deer. I'll go ask in person, then show the wording. See what they say about whats printed, and why 9 tube was about to get me screwed few years ago.

Using a PMAG 30 is still illegal, regardless if it's going into a bolt gun or not.

If someone tried to pull that shit on me, I'd have them show me the exact law I "broke". Maybe that's not the right approach to it, but I'd rather find out then than to have to pay money (I guess I could defend myself?) for a lawyer or whatever to basically tell them the same thing at the hearing. I suppose they'd trump it up to something else if they knew I was right (and being a smartass) and they didn't wanna admit they were wrong, who knows.

With me it was actually a NYS trooper. Was stopped because area I was parked in. Then got the 3rd degree questions with a 18 1/2 gun (maybe 20) don't remember with a 9 tube.

In New York State, you should avoid inclusive reading of regulations. If something is not explicitly permitted by unambiguous and well understood text, I’d wouldn’t depended on it being so.

Ive also always heard that you cannot be "caught" with sabots outside of deer season. This is why Ive always carried buckshot or Yotes and that. and I thought it was no more than a magazine capacity of 4 with 1 in chamber = your five. The last two bolt guns have 4 round magazines.
I remember that being said in my hunter safety course many years ago. they stressed 4 round mag when afeild.
but again. many may have other ideas on this. I use it all as a guide. ONLY time I see DEC is when fishing.. LOL never when hunting...or on the snowmobile trails........

I do remember the 4+1 mag restriction in the old regs book but nothing is said about bolt action in the current hunting regulation book

If you have a 10rd mag just toss a nylon or wood block to stop at 5 and you are GTG.
Make sure you know your local ordinances and hunting restrictions for each game/season wherever you are.
Most of these things are covered in the Hunters Ed program.
Also any doubts ask the conservation officers. They are super cool folks, at least every single iteration I had with them.
They are not there to get you, they are there to protect the animals and environment from poachers and other type of degenerates.
Make sure you know your local ordinances and hunting restrictions for each game/season wherever you are.

My friend and I have been discussing this the last few days .. last night we left a message on DEC officer Wade's phone so hopefully he will get a call back on it .. I checked out his fixed mag AR last night , floor plate pops right off .. just push a button on the bottom .. now to see if can find a limiter or make one if we have to

you can make that with a stripper clip. Cut it, bend the bottom to make a base and slide the "rod" end in the back
channel between the spring and the mag wall. Before you bend and make a cut then find out where the follower
needs to stop and make a mark on the clip. Then cut the lips of the clip just so slighly so they can bend, bend and open those so there is a base. slide it back in there and put the spring on follower and close up.
you can do the same thing with a number of things anything made of metal I suggest that is easy to bend yet rigid enough for the stop and can make a effecitve stop. I say the stripper clip because everyone has those form the 5.56 ammo packs.
You can even made stops to convert a large capacity mag like a glock to compliance. same idea but in this case
you have to make a T vs. a L so the stop is going to be in the middle inside the spring.
very simple unless one doesn't know how to use a screw driver and small saw. No risk to screwing anything here
even if it takes a couple of tries.

I tried making a limiter for my fixed mag AR with little success, but I didn't try really hard. Anything that moves side to side will bind the spring.

not between the spring and the mag. and of course a base to support and also avoid rattling around.
Let me see if I can make some pics so people who need a couple of hunting mags can make them from reliable 10 round
like ASC that are affordable and very well made.

That's probably where my failures were lol. I was using plexiglass, if I would have epoxied it to a flat base it probably would have worked but I didn't have a good enough epoxy.

there if is large enough. something like a small plastic rod. you just don't wan that thing to move up and down
making noise but otherwise the back part of the follower will stop and if the top of that part metal or plastic
is rounded and deburred so it doesn't interfere with the spring then it will work like butter.
Again a bent and cut stripper clip works. Many common things will make a stop w/o spending a dime I am sure.

the mag my friend and his wife has is a MTF mag on there fixed AR .. since its a fixed mag we need a new floor plate to glue a blocker to it keep from binding up the spring or just drop something in there and deal with it .. GRRR shit this really shouldn't be a issue .. lol .. i guess we could just hot glue a blocker and then pop it off after hunting ..
