I'm looking at carrying when I'm deer hunting this season. I was wondering how everyone carries. I was thinking about a drop leg holster.
Yup. Used my 1911 one year while i was cleaning a kill. My rifle was outta reach and a buck walked it.....needless to say he was carried out.
Live and learn. Happened twice to me many years ago. I follow the rules by unloading your firearm so you can set it down to gut your doe and what walks in a nice 8 pointer. Fuck the rules
Really, is that really a rule? I have never unloaded my gun while hunting. Chambered until the day of hunting is done. Huh, never knew!
Disclaimer. I do not agree with the laws nor do I think they make sense which is why they are hardly ever enforced so don't shoot the messenger.
I also realize you, your daddy, and, granddaddy have done so for years without incident but according to Penal Laws 265 and 400, it is illegal to open carry in this state even while hunting.
Penal Law 265 makes it illegal to have a pistol unless exempted or licensed via Penal Law 400.
Penal Law 400 only licenses you to carry concealed without regard to location.
So in layman's terms, for the average citizen it is illegal to touch, have, or carry any handgun in NYS unless you have a license. Unfortunately, the only license you can get is a concealed carry license.
Would this work for you? Open yet concealed and easy try get to.I don't disagree with what you wrote. I know we've went back and forth at the other place about this very point. I should have put the disclosure on the opening post neglecting open carry laws or lack there of. I'm more looking at/for efficient field use and deployment.
For other people that answered how they carry thank you. I thought about a OWB holster considering that I already have one that I use for competition with my 1911. As people the have stated they wear it under their vest. I too wear a field jacket. One of the tan/blaze orange ones that are used primarily for small game. I usually carry my field cleaning kit in the rear game pouch. And my ammo and supplies in the front pouches. My concern with carrying under this jacket is two fold. First and foremost is loss of the firearm. I have a lot of stuff going on in that region along with multiple layers of clothes. The second concern is access. This point has two parts: speed of access and safety of the draw. Am I blowing this out of proportion?
What if the deer as frying pan armor? You might want the 9mm after all. All kidding aside this has been my philosophy also. I figured it wouldn't hurt to carry while hunting for any number of crazy scenarios that will never happen. But it doesn't hurt to be a little manic every once and a while. You know it's funny. I generally don't carry when I'm hunting. I guess I figure if I can't kill something with my .30-06 then my 9mm probably won't do anything. Having said that I recently picked up a S&W 686 in .357 Mag with a 6 inch barrel so I suppose I could carry that in case a bear sneaks up on me.
From what Encon officers that have come to our Hunter Ed classes have told us, Is if it is your primary firearm they don't have a problem with it not being concealed. A secondary firearm it needs to be concealed.
Your Encon officer could have a different opinion?
That's it! I'm out of here. This is my last post. I can't take it anymore. Mods please delete my profile or ban me!What if the deer as frying pan armor? You might want the 9mm after all.
