Since I bought my Marlin 1936, this past weekend, I have been doing some online research about preserving as much of the case coloring that remains that is possible to preserve. If anyone has experience doing so wherein a particular method has worked, please share the info. Likewise if anyone has any information as to how case color got ruined on their firearm, please share that too so I know what to avoid.
I also have read that things like sunlight can ruin case color; although, I find that a bit incredible. Yet, I am not sure and would like to find out if such is the case or not. I have also read that some folks use lacquer or clear-coat over the case colored area to protect it and I am wondering if that would not, in the long run, cause more problems than t solved due to whatever chemicals are in the lacquer or clear-coat. additionally, I have seen where folks claim that any skin to case colored metal contact can ruin case color very quickly if put away without cleaning off any residues let by your fingertips since case coloring is decorative and not protective of the metal as is bluing at least to some extent.
Thanks,
Glenn B
