Charles Schumer says D.C. statehood is a priority, a first for Senate Democrats

Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) on Thursday made D.C. statehood a priority for the Democratic caucus for the first time.

Schumer touted statehood among his top three ways to bolster voting rights, a day before the House is expected to pass a sweeping resolution on the topic that includes a call to make the District the 51st state. It would be the first time either chamber of Congress has endorsed D.C. statehood.

“Even though we don’t talk about it enough, we have a population larger than two states living here in Washington, D.C., without full congressional representation,” Schumer said in a Senate floor speech Thursday.

I'm sure the rest of Virginia would love this.
I am a proponent of making all large metropolitan areas city-states. They should have their own independent representation and this would keep urban influence from infecting more rural areas. Rural and urban representation must be equal however.

If I recall my history classes the founders specifically set up the district of columbia so the capital would not be in any one state. Statehood makes no goddam sense as a result, but of course the corrupt dems want it because it would be another solid democratic state.

This is another transparent attempt to create more Progressive seats in the senate and house. This has nothing to do with voting rights. The constitution says, if you want to vote and you work in DC, then go home and vote. Pretty simple. I have no sympathy for those who live full time in DC. It was never intended to be a full time city. So, GO HOME and vote.
