just need something basic for a 10/22 gun to teach my girlfriend on. i just cant bring myself to pick up the cheapest thing on amazon. What are recommendations for something under 50$. maybe $100.

My 10/22 has a 3x9 Simmons on it and has had it since 1997. Still works the way it should.

You cant beat the Bushnell TRS-25 for an inexpensive red dot.
I got a cheap Ruger branded 4x scope off of ebay on one of my 10/22s for about 6 or 8 years now. I haven't had to mess with it since I forst mounted it and it still works fine.

I agree with Kev. The trs is a great buy for the price. If you want to pay less, I have not used this, but it gets good reviews at ar15.com for the price.

save your money and get a bit better scope like a 2-7 with a stadia in a uniform unit of measure.

I've always wanted to try out one of those ultra cheap red dots so maybe I'll pick up that one you linked. It won't be permanent so im not worried about getting anything good.
I have a few Center Point scopes on 22's the are pretty good for the $ the rings that come with them are junk. I also have a Tasco Varmint/Tactical 2.5-10 x 44 that has been on one of my 10/22's for years now! Now for a little more money the Nikon Pro-Staff EFR Target scope is very popular at my Club, I have 2 of them one on my RAR and the other on my 96/22. Thinking about get a 3rd for my 77/22 and take off the Weaver T-24 as I am not shooting in the Benchrest league now! The EFR scopes run around $189.00 you my catch a sale on-line, I got my second one on sale for $144.00 from Optics Planet.

The BSA Rimfire line of scopes are really good. The 22 comes with 3 dials for the 3 common grains of 22: 36, 40 and i forget the other. Under 50 bux

I have yet to see a BSA that was even worth $1, honestly. I could see spending $50 on a Nikon or Leupold entry model product; but BSA gives new meaning to the words "total shit".

This topic comes up quite often.
Please consider this...
- Do you want to set the scope for a known distance perhaps withing 50 yards and perhaps be fixed in terms of magnification that means
always the same distance and/or same size of target?
- Since the trajectory of 22LR is quite pronounced, do you want something that can be used to easily adjust both in terms of magnification
and windage/elevation?
- Even at a fixed distance lets say 100 yards do you want the adjustment to be intuitive and efficient lets say in a windy day?
- If you want something adjustable do you want something that is easy to adjust and return to other zero positions?
- Alternatively do you want to be able to do that very quickly and efficiently w/o fiddling with hard to adjust turrets or plain reticles
like the popular plex. This might be ok for calibers with a long point blank range but maybe not for a 22 moving within 200 yards.
Same limitations for the simple red dots that lack of correction or magnification makes them even harder and too coarse to adjust
shots efficiently.
Do you want to teach some ballistics or simply set it at a fixed distance and just shoot?
That is why I suggested something with long eye relief, some sort of magnification and with nice turrets or a stadia in a uniform unit of measure.
If one is just going to shoot squirrels or racoons at 20 yards then anything will do otherwise save a bit of money and buy
something functional. BSA, barska, simmons, sniper this, sniper that, black ops, etc.. are popular for airsoft and cheap airguns but IMO is like putting money inside the trash can.
Remember that even if you change guns a nice scope will stay with you. Selling guns with scopes is loosing money on the optics unless
they are garbage that is what many retailers do with the combos. I mean a few exceptions with some of the budget ones like nikon
but not many.

Yeah BSA customers might represent just a 99% of the people who were looking for a scope for a serious job and got a paper weight.
the other 1% are using them w/o problems but not sure for what or how. LOL
What are they 100 bucks give or take? Better take the wife out for dinner and use the iron sights or save the money for something that works.

This subject comes up many times here and in the previous forums and nothing has changed.
It just gets lost in the space with limited search+classification features.

I keep mine zeroed at 50 yards. At less than 25 yards, I hold low. At over 50, I hold high. For that kind of shooting, anything with a clear field of view that can hold zero will be just fine. That includes Tasco, Barska, Bushnell and anything else that will hold a zero and doesn't need the turret adjustments to be able to withstand being repeatedly wound up like a toy car.
If you want to be super tricky tactical, then you'll need the bells and whistles.

No the scopes that I started out with years ago were Tasco's. Still have one on a 10/22 it is a 2.5-10 x 44 tactical/varmint scope it is about 15 years old now. But then I joined a Gun Club and started looking though other shooters scopes and WOW what a difference! But now most of my rifles wear Nikon's! And this thread now has me thinking about ordering another Nikon Prostaff Target EFR, I was going to take the one on my 96/22 and put it on my 77/22 but I think I'll just buy another one!!

Just something simple like changing the magnification might shift the poi so that is not holding a zero under any circumstances.
I think a lot of people do not even need a scope to pop a squirrel at 20 to 50 yards but the idea here is to get something
in the budget department but something that is not total trash so if one wants to shoot at 100 even 150 and/or really small
game or headshot on a bird the 22LR is capable of that accuracy but this type of airsoft equipment will eliminate that chance.
Countless tests and reports demonstrate that they are garbage even for the most basic features and tests. This doesn't mean that
all models on these brands are totally useless. There might be some that work for a few folks for what they do but their track
record is horrible. This is a fact.
One thing is if one doesn't need it at all but one doesn't have to be a sniper to need a scope with a meaningful adjustment. The 22LR with
quality loads and decent firearm is a very capable round. I have taken fox as far as 150 yards with subsonic ammo.
So we cannot defend the position to invest on this type of stuff. It is a wrong no matter what firearm. Even in the low budget there are
scopes that are actually designed for firearms even if they are chinese sutff with limited features they can actually work.
Like always this is just forum advice and this is a free country so in the end one might do as they wish.
I do believe a useful and decent scope always stays and that is the best investment one can make.

Alright looks like i poked a sleeping bear in all of you when i asked this question. well thanks to your suggestions i have an idea of what I'm looking for. thanks for the suggestions and i will post again when i've decided what to go with and my reasoning.

This is all pretty fundamental having tried many formulas and also considering others experiences shared on this and other forums in the past.
I personally think there is a huge appeal for a scope that has some sort of stadia design so one doesn't have to fiddle with turrets and due to the nature
of the round and variety of loads and speeds from the stingers to the subsonic. A simple mil dot will allow someone to quickly adapt to different loads
and ranges by simply memorizing the holdover points in that reticle. Same can be achieved with some sort of BDC visually but it is harder to actually
translate an estimated value since the BDCS are not in a unit of meausure like mil or moa reticles.
Think about it, it is really very simple. Even for airguns is a huge help vs a plex for this type of trajectories.
Just to help you see how this simple approach will actually be very helpful this is a ballistic chart of a 40gr minimag shot from a 10/22.
Estimated 10mph wind and 555ft asl over sea level so more or less for orientation this will show how a meaningful and practical way of adjustment
that with something simple that works will help the shooter put the bullets where they belong.
100yard zero.
This is also why I do a 100 yards zero vs 50 yards zero. Look at the mean values in the trajectory if a shot is needed at 100 or even 125 or 150 yards.
And one can make good contact and pop small game as far as 300 yards with it but anything above 200 yards becomes very erratic.
50 yards zero (More variance so less versatile IMO)
