I've shot some very large coyotes over the years, and although a 90 lb dog is unusual, it's not unheard of. The bone structure of the head just doesn't look right to me. The snout is shaped wrong, and the eyes are set too far apart. What are the possibilities this is a hybrid coyote / domestic dog ? Where was this critter taken ?

I e heard many reports of hybrids. I think even the DEC acknowledges there are hybrids, just no cougars around. Apparently DEC people only date women their own age or younger.

same here. But all the ones I saw were smaller.
I think everyone is saying this is a hybrid wolf-coyote.

Cornell University establish the existence of wolf DNA in eastern yotes several years ago. As the wolfs numbers were decreasing and the coyotes started moving on in and your a horny wolf but can’t find another what’s a guy to do? If I remember correctly it was red and gray wolf dna. It’s why they run bigger and we have the color phases you don’t see out west.

It all depends on the mix of wolf or coyote. I have two jersey wollley rabbits and they are a mix of dwarf and angora. One is under 2 lbs and the other is approaching 3lbs. One has tiny ears like a dwarf and the other has ears much longer. It’s all in the mixing of the genes. Maybe this was a hybrid that had hybrid parents and bred with a wolf again, if that’s possible?? Sometimes hybrid can’t breed. Tiger muskies can’t.

I haven't seen one in probably fifteen years but there were a few around here back then that approached german shepherd size. Today they look pretty much coyote size, though there are some stunning color variations. I saw one that was mostly red like a fox with the grayish yellow mottling and black feet.

There is a real good documentary on Eastern hybrid coyotes. They are a mix with the Canadian timber wolf. Search it out on Amazon Prime.

S. U. studied Adirondack coyotes quite a while back, reported that 80% had DNA from the Canadian Algonquin wolf pack, that's where the large size comes from.

Coywolf. I've read a lot that indicates they are the dominant critter in the northeast.

Shot at the end of last years season. It was for sure German Shepard size. Never weighed it but it took my buddy and I both to drag it back to the barn.

We have a lot of coyotes here in eastern Columbia county.I am surrounded by farms and they are well fed.Most are large like the one in Jamies post but even the smaller ones are not scrawny.Got a sheep farm behind me, about 200 acres of grazing land, he shoots them all the time, gets a dozen or more a year.The farm across the road is mostly agricultural but has ducks and chickens and traps them in season and shoots them as nuisance control all year.The owner has a 180 lb mastiff that gets a couple a year.Mastiff, Trudy, is great at keeping them out of the barn, problem is when people come to visit she will go to the barn and get a chicken and drop it at the feet of the visitor.She kills more chickens than the yotes,lol.There is also a house up on a hill overlooking both these farms and he shoots a lot.All tolled in this square mile or so there have to be over 30 a year taken and it doesnt seem to put a dent in the population.

On the coyote from 1975 - (2 posts above) - S. U. was doing a study at the time and they requested hunters to send in coyote skulls. This one was skinned, and the head sent to S.U. - Results proved it to be pure coyote. The good part was, the skinned head was left in a small, black trash bag, in my truck bed, - And my wife, not knowing what it was, - (she thought I had left something from the store in my truck by accident,) - brought it into the kitchen and dumped the contents of the bag onto the counter. I can still hear the screaming and cursing. It wasn't pleasant!
