The shells here are from a old fellas estate stored in the house ..

Those appear to have been exposed to some extreme elements. Maybe even submerged in water for an extended period of time. Or it could have been some chemical contact. Lead doesn't normally oxide like that. If this was the norm the old lead pipes would look 100% different from how they do when getting removed.

I suspect the same. Look how nice the brass is, weird.

The powder from those shells would be very telling. I'm betting chemical over water. The real question was this on purpose or accident. If accident what could it be house hold chemical or a gun product. This would all be interesting info to know.

It looks like electrolysis. Could have been in contact with a dissimilar metals most likely in a wet or extremely humid environment.

the guy that gave me the box of them 12ga shells it was just the top row of shells and a few of the 2nd row in the box of 25.
they were up in the over head cupboard in the kitchen. the powder in the split shells is good dry and will ignite with a match
wish i had a pic of the first slug i cut open the rifling on the slug looked like sheets of paper lifting off it .. this is why i originally said
about the lead oxide .. I'm thinking if it gets in a crack or pinhole in the led it will swell it up as it grows .. the 22LR that is swelled up was
the whole box of 50 everyone like it .. i have no clue on the age of the box some of the boxes i have are priced 99 cent for a bx of fifty ..
all from my dad's estate and they were stored in the spare bed room in the house in a wooden ammo box .. Ive only had them a few years since my dad passed away ...

Upper shelf in a kitchen is a bad place to store something like that. Constant exposure to high humidity and smoke from cooking, along with contaminants, both acidic and alkaline those two vehicles will carry. If you were to remove the lead oxide from the slug you would find the diameter of the slug to be smaller, lead does not swell the oxide grows removing lead from the slug. Lead oxide is bad stuff its dust when disturbed can be breathed in from the air and also absorbed through skin. Get that crap out of your shop!!!!

My 597 can't load Thunderbolts. Brand new, out of the box, they won't load. They won't load in my brother in law's 597 either. I may have to check them in my old man's old single shot someday, since I have them and can't use them.
