Both spellings of the word, whiskey and whisky, are correct. The tricky part is matching the right spelling with the right country of origin. If you’re talking about a drink that’s been made in Scotland, Canada, or Japan, use the spelling without the e—whisky. When referring to drinks distilled in the United States or Ireland, use the e—whiskey.

Naw, I’m thoroughly aware that American distillates are sometimes labeled as whiskey, with the e. The best whisky is made in Scotland, specifically on Islay. Sure, it’s often aged in once-used American oak barrels from those same American whiskeys that I disparage. But, that’s just my opinion, man. Good whisky hath no e. Unless you’re asking about more than one of them, in which case, the plural of whisky has an e, as in whiskies. American versions are spelled in the plural similar to monkeys. American spirits are often produced in column stills, while good whisky is made in a pot still for a much more refined distillate. We haven’t even discussed barley vs corn yet.
And no amount of reparations can make corn into a good dram, but corn likker can lead to an increase in crime. (To return to the topic at hand.)
