I'm going to say "Get the Glock" but you will, of course, get the 10 rounder. You will love the weight of the 19, or lack of it. Obtaining standard capacity magazines out of state will be much easier as well. Of course, I am sure that you will leave them out of state when you return to the Empire Strikes Back state. Tons of accessories too. The trigger on the Smith is long and rather stiff. You won't like it compared to the 1911. The Bersa is nice but you'll have a tough time finding magazines. The Rock Island looks to be a knockoff of a CZ but I really don't know for sure. Spend the extra money on the Glock and don't look back.

By the way, I HATED Glocks when they were first offered to me. Carried a 1911 back then, Kimber Compact, officer's frame and a 4 inch barrel, steel frame blued. Have had a 19 three times until 2005 when I bought my last and current one. Won't trade it anymore. Just got a Glock 43 as it's companion, trading my beloved XDS 45. I just shoot the 43 better than the XDS. Never thought twenty years ago that a Glock would be my EDC gun, nudging out the J frame revolver, 1911, and Browning High Power to the back of the safe.

Glock 19. Or better yet get a Glock 23 and get a 9mm conversion barrel for it. That way you'll have two guns in one. Later you can get a 357sig barrel and have three guns in one.

Glock 43! Throw a set of talon grips on it and you have yourself a solid carry gun. Plus it's fun to shoot.

I'd say 226 but either would be a good choice.

If you're looking for a more compact one the Glock recommendations are good but also consider the Sig P320. You can get full size, compact, carry (still not entirely sure what the difference between those two are) and subcompact. Don't have one myself but almost all the reviews I read say it's just as good if not better than the comparable Glock.

I've actually got the 226 but based my recommendation on the size of the guns the op is considering. The 229 in my mind somewhat similar to the G19. I've shot the 19 a few times and if I didn't have to look at it consider it a nice gun. I actually shoot it very well but life is too short to have an ugly gun.

My rational for getting the Glock 23 was it's versatility. I would have gone with the 19 except you can't convert it the way you can the 23. They are the exact same gun (frame and size) only different calibers.

My vote goes for a Glock too. I use to be a Glock hater, but when I picked up a 43 it was a done deal. I can't wait to get a bigger Glock!

I have one of those S&W in 40. The trigger is terrible to say the least. I hope to put a trigger kit this winter, but am doubtful that I will like the gun any better. I'm against selling guns but if I was OK with selling I this would be the first to go.

The Glocks are the 57 Chevy of pistols. More after market accessories are available for it than any other gun, with the exception of the 1911. Holsters, trigger kits, sights, lights, lasers, finishes, etc so you can make it yours. The SD9 is on sale for $349 at Gander right now so after shipping and FFL fees you'd probably break even although adding tax onto it may more than offset that. I've been eyeing that gun up and reading a lot of reviews on it. It seems to get good reviews for the most part. I'm going to hold back until I see what goes on for Black Friday sales. In free states it goes for under $300 all the time. If it goes that low locally on Black Friday I'm going to grab one up.

It's all subjective. Honestly, the more I looked at them the more I came to appreciate their design aspects. Then it also just felt great in my hand and had a nice balance to it. I know they aren't as nice to look at as say a 1911 or a classic like a Colt SAA but they are far from ugly in my opinion. There are way uglier guns out there.

I vote Glock 19, as I don't think you can wrong with it from a reliability standpoint. But, you said you're not a big fan of Glocks. Therefore, it might not be a good fit for you and the last thing you want to do is spend cash on a new pistol and right from the get go, you're already not fond of it. The M&P 9mm compact is another worthy option to look at that is comparable to the G19.

As far as Glocks not "looking good"...beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The utilitarian look they have is something that always drew me to them. The squared off, combat look is about as sexy as I need my pistols to be.
