You are likely to get a better condition rifle by mail ordering it from CMP. I noticed they sell lesser quality through the stores, where you can see what you are buying. Just something I noticed.

Awesome but what kind of condition? I can't imagine they were anything but rode hard and put away wet, and the climate in the Philippines isn't great for gun storage.
I really want one bad but my stepfather has one that I will eventually get and can use any time I want. If I even encounter one cheap, it will be hard to say no though.
Yes priorities are important. Though after a move to a free state your gun purchase priorites may well shift.

CMP rifles can range from beat up rack grades for 500ish to beyond 1500 for collector grades. I would say you can get a nice one for $700-$800. On the secondary market pretty much $1,000 and up unless it's a beater.
Service grade specials are 1K.
Those are good deals for what can almost be like a factory new rifle. That's what I have. I should get around to having it fixed one of these days.

These could really be a part of history. Or they could be post war surplus packed in cosmoline. I have an IH 1953 man do I love shooting this gun. Would I like to have one from the Pacific Theater YES. I binge watched the mini series The Pacific and was stunned by what those guys had to endure, much less live with for the rest of their days.

So is it true that the Criterion barrels they put on the specials are basically match grade quality but in a GI profile? I know mine shot better than any non accurized Garand shooting surplus ammo had any buisness to.

Keep in mind the current stock has dwindled badly lately so I don't even know if they are available right now. And who knows what condition these Philippine ones are in. Giving the tropical environment I'd guess pretty poor.
That went out the window with the election anyway. Put it up on Gunbroker and wait. Some dumbass will come along eventually. I once saw a Yugo SKS go for $800 on there!

Off the bags I could get sub 3" groups @100 all day with surplus ball! That's not normal. I really need to get the extraction issue on that thing sorted out, haven't shot it in 2 years now!
Nope, pot luck. But the folks there do a good job of rehabing the crappier ones.
