Actually you need to pressure your union officials to make these sort of statements publicly on behalf of all the officers they represent.

They can fire an officer, but not the whole union. That's the whole point of a union.

I am confused about how advertising you will defend your oath the constitution is considered making a political statement. The constitution is the framework unto which our country was founded; it's relevant regardless of your political views. If supporting the constitution is making a political statement, then swearing an oath to it as a public servant is DEFINITELY making a political statement.

NO, it's very few of us are stupid enough to get into our RMP's, display our shield, patch and full uniform and equipment while on duty, and make statements implying that we won't do our jobs.

This actually made me a little sick to my stomach. Publicly stating that you will defend your oath to the constitution (that you took publicly) is implying a cop won't do his/her job? I'd argue that any cop that has enforced NY gun laws has violated their oath to the constitution and therefore is not doing their job.

On the other hand We the People grant police authority over us,this is a government agency not a private sports franchise. Police need to be accountable for illegal actions such as suppressing free speech same as if they committed any other crime. It seems like the Constitution takes a back seat any time it suits them IT IS THE LAW. No matter what the president, governor , mayor or some judge says.

What pisses me off is they will fire him for doing whats right but they wont fire the cop who arrested an innocent person peacefully protesting the actions of the local government.

You can argue whatever you want, but the fact remains that department social media policies are pretty clear cut. He could've been discussing any issue, it doesn't matter. When a cop speaks in uniform, they are representing the department. No different than any other action we take on duty.

When a cop does something good, he's speaking for the department and that's unacceptable.

When he does something bad he's just a one off bad apple.

Right and his message was that he was going to uphold the constitution which his department made him swear an oath to before he got his badge. If the department is not ok with officers supporting the constitution publicly while on duty, the department should not require an oath to the constitution. Instead the oath should be to uphold whatever orders your superior gives you. THAT would be more realistic.

Because you are focusing on what he said, rather than the fact that cops are typically prohibited from making political statements in uniform, especially while on-duty.

Anything you say, can and will be used against you, in a court of law. If you don’t remember that from Adam 12 reruns, I don’t feel sorry for you.

When asked, do you know why I pulled you over? You don’t have to answer.
the best advice most lawyers give is: shut your pie hole, hand them your license, registration and insurance, then put both hands on the wheel and look straight forward. Arguing or admitting you did something wrong is always going to be used against you, chalk it up as a lesson learned and let it go.

Now let’s get this thread back on topic.

The Officer most likely got fired for voicing a political opinion in uniform on the job. As a public servant you have to watch what you say on “company time“ or on “company property“ so to speak.

Do I agree, No but, I do understand the rules as I have to live with them myself.
He also understood the rules and posted his rant anyway. It was way too easy for the Brass to fire him because he did it on company time in a company car while in uniform. My guess is he wanted to get fired, so he pulled a General McChrystal And got his wish.

The problem is that "people are entitled to due process" and "I support the constitution" shouldn't be considered political statements.

Only in crazy town are obvious statements like that considered political.
