It doesn't usually work like that. You don't even have to tell them about firearms.
If you get labeled as an involuntary hospital admission or one of a laundry list of "professionals" decides you're a risk to yourself or others - you and your health info get transmitted to the county and then the state. It's pretty much automatic and it will result in them coming for your guns.
The problem is that the hospitals have been training personnel to label patients as involuntary or a danger for questionable conditions and/or admissions. Remember, it's not the highest level people (Drs, etc.) that end up doing the paperwork. It's supposedly to cover their asses in the event that a patient actually goes on a murderous rampage. This doesn't even take into account the loonies like Greywolf's therapist that might initiate a 9.46 report just out of spite or ignorant fear.
That therapist, based only on her judgement, can now submit a report on Greywolf that will trigger suspension of his permit and confiscation of his guns. Technically, it may not be legal because she isn't providing services directly to him but THERE IS NO CONSEQUENCE FOR FALSE REPORTS. The "professionals" are specifically exempted from civil and criminal liability resulting from these reports or lack thereof (which is why I don't believe the CYA justification above). Also, once the report is made, there is NO attempt to verify the legitimacy of the report until you fight, in court, to get your guns/permit back.
