CT non-resident

I didn't think so, but then I re-read the application...

"You must hold a valid permit or license to carry a pistol or revolver issued by a recognized United States jurisdiction."

Sounds like you may be able to do it if you have a diff out of state permit. It doesn't specify your home state, but I could be wrong. Do other states even give out non-resident permits to people without permits in their home states? IDK about that either.

Hopefully someone else will chime in that knows for sure

Just took a peek at my CT instructions and it says:

"A legal Resident of the united states with a permit or license to carry a pistol or revolver in any state which meets or exceeds the requirements of the CT statute may apply directly to the Special Licensing and Firearms Unit for a CT state pistol permit"

It doesn't say what states meet or exceed, but it also doesn't say your home state either. NY would clearly meet or exceed, while NH probably wouldn't. You could try maybe with Utah or FL ?

I am currently waiting for my CT permit (or at least a letter back saying the prints are illegible, lol) and you must have the NRA basic pistol course, both online portion and live firing portion to get your non-resident CT permit.

You don't need to take the course in CT. Take a live fire training course in NY and the certificate will be good for all states requiring them. @drobens

The course has to be NRA Basic Pistol. Do not take the NRA First Steps Course.

You generally cannot take the live fire portion of basic pistol in NY unless you have a NY permit. Some instructors will give classroom in NY and pistol in CT. I can recommend one in Peekskill who I believe will accommodate that. Otherwise check out NRA instructor page NRAInstructors.org - Portal for NRA Certified Instructors, NRA Education and Training. I took Basic Pistol in CT and it was a lot cheaper than in NY, LOL....

I was told basically the same thing. You cannot touch a handgun in NY unless you have a permit. The instructor told me that the class would be mixed. Those with permits and those without. The live fire would have to be in CT.

I passed on his class and went directly to Danbury and took a class there all in one shot.

Going to CT is the best bet unless you find an instructor that is willing to do the live fire here in NY and the class will be only people who have a NY permit.

We offer the CT course for $150. However we package it with VA, FL, AZ, ME, NH and MA. We provide all of the applications for the states listed as we ll as passport photos for those that require it, and Fingerprints for AZ and CT. Yes I know that NH, AZ and ME are "constitutional carry" states, but if you want the reciprocity, you'll need the permits. (NH gets you PA, and AZ gets you NV).
It's up to the student to apply and mail in which ever applications in the package they want.
You DO need a NY pistol permit however, as there is live fire involved.

Also, I called to get the CT application packet mailed to me and the guy confirmed that as long as you have a permit from ANY state, you're eligible to apply, it doesn't have to be from your home state.

I don't do any permit training classes. My buddy Mark from MB Firearms Safety Training does do permit classes. Last I heard, you need the NRA pistol class. But that was a few years ago. Not sure what is current.

Effective 7/1/2016, Nevada now recognizes Utah. The only thing that Arizona really gets you now is New Mexico.
Florida covers NM too, but the fingerprint process with Florida (must be done by a LEO) can be a PITA and it can be cost-prohibitive. Florida also requires live fire, while none of the other listed states do.

I'm not sure if CT technically requires live fire, but I do know they require NRA Basic Pistol (which requires live fire).

FWIW, on those fields on my application i put "target / all lawful purposes", and then i put my westchester permit. I guess you would put whatever locale you are using as your permit to show them.
